Ag Swimmers Meet Texas
By JERRY WIZIG
Battalion Sports Editor
So now they’ve finally decided Paul (Bear) Bryant isn’t
going to Baton Rouge after all, when the principal involved
wasn’t remotely thinking of such a tnove.
The whole incident of “The Mass Migration” (Bryant was
supposed to take most of his present staff with him) shows
how distorted a single rumor can become. Incidentally, the
whole thing originated from Austin, more particularly from
the University of Texas athletic office, says a reliable source.

A&M’s varsity and freshman
swimming teams will be entertain
ed by Texas today in a dual meet
at Austin.
The freshmen meet will begin
at 3 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30.
“We have a well balanced team

the only place Bryant and his
staff would be going is to the

BATON ROUGE, La., Feb. 1GGP)
Louisiana State university yester
day handed youthful Paul F. Diet
zel, 30-year-old Army line coach
and former assistant to Paul
Bryant at Kentucky, the job of
rebuilding the Southeastern con
ference school’s football prestige.
The handsome, former Miami
(Ohio) star was given a three-
year contract at $13,000 yearly to
succeed Gaynell Tinsley as head
football coach.

this year,” said Coach Art Adam
son, “and we’ll certainly be in the
i-unning for the conference champ
ionship.”
In the conference relay meet at
Dallas earlier this year the Aggies
finished two points behind first
place SMU and two points in front
of Texas.
“That’s the kind of race we have
this year,” said Adamson, “no
team is a cinch to win.”
The Aggies appear strongest in
the medley relay so far this year.
In a meet with Florida State the
Cadets time in the medley was
five seconds under the Southwest
conference record.
Members of the relay team are
John Speich, Norman Ufer and
Richard Weick.
Adamson singled out Ufer and
John Devenport as doing “very
well” in the back stroke. He also
praised Don Horne, Richard Hunk
ier and Speich in the sprints, and
Weick in the breast stroke.
Top Fish swimmers this year in
clude Jose Merino and Jerry
Mount in the sprints, Charles
Cook and Jimmy Dye, back stroke,
and Chuck Price, breast stroke.

order to get to Mississippi,
Bryant’s real destination.
He reportedly talked with Dar
rell Royal, head coach of Missis
sippi State, about the split-T. Next
to Jack Mitchell, new head coach
at Arkansas, Royal generally is
rated the greatest split-T man-
under ever at Oklahoma.
(You can also bet that LSU of
ficials wanted to talk to Bryant
about Dietzel, a former assistant
to him at Kentucky, so Bryant
probably had to spend some time
in Louisiana after all.)
The whole unfortunate incident
might have been an honest mistake
that simply got all out of propor
tion because the name Bryant was
involved. •
The big guy has fired the imag
ination of the whole state as few
people have been able to do. It
wouldn’t be surpi-ising if Bryant
was the best known public figure
in the state, next to the governor
of course.
Think of the effect this in
cident would have had on A&M
recruiting o f athletes this
spring if the LSU announce
ment hadn’t come so soon.
