Spring football practice at A&M
probably will begin Feb. 17, a week
from Thursday, or Feb. 19, a week
from Saturday, “depending on the
weather,” said head football coach
Paul Bryant yesterday.
Bryant said about 75 or 80 can
didates are expected for the drills,
which under Southwest conference
rules include 18 practice days with
in a 25 day period.

Chick Gonzales bucketed 13

Arthur Wenske scored six points

The Aggies get Baylor, SMU and

Last week, Bryant had some
bad news for Aggie fans—the fact
that two lettermen from the 1954
squad, tackle Bill Schroeder and
quarterback Charlie Scott — had
left the squad.
Bryant also said Gerald Her,
starting center on the ’54 Fish
team, and four other freshmen—
tackles Jackie Davis, Tommye
Parker and Joe Rokyta, and full
back Rudy Estrada—were ineligible
because of bad grades.
Schroeder, one of the best line
men on last season’s varsity, de

cause of the effects of a sunstroke
he suffered last summer. It ham
pered his play all last year. Scott

On the bright side of the picture
is the fact that the ineligibility list
doesn’t include any other members
of the Fish team that finished the
season with the unofficial SWC

All of the “name” players—Jim
Stanley, John Crow, Ken Hall, Jim

many had close calls.
