Fish Get Praise from Bryant
After 20-7 Win over Shorthorns
The Aggie Fish, holder of the
unofficial Southwest conference
freshman title after a 20-7 win
over Texas Shorthoras Saturday,
got some praise from Head Coach
Paul Bryant.
Bryant said yesterday, “I was
pleased jyith the way they won,
coming from behind, and I was
pleased with their goal-line
stands.”
Asked about top prospects for
next year’s varsity, Bryant said,
“It’s too early to tell now, but I
was very much impressed with
guard Jim Langston, quarterback
Donald Grant, halfbacks Bill Dendy
and Loyd Taylor and fullbacks Ken
Hall and Roddy Osborne.”
Taylor was the leading rusher
for the Fish with 47 yards in 9
tries and scored once. Halfback
John Crow got 34 in 4, returned
three punts for 48 yards and one
kickoff for 14 yards, and caught a
pass for 17 yards.
Saturday, the Freshmen unveiled
a passing game that caught the
Yearlings off balance. Quarter
backs Jimmy Wright, the starter,
and Grant completed 7 of 9 for 154
yards. One went for 26 yards to
end Bobby Marks to set up the first
Fish touchdown, another for 46
yards to end Roger Hobson led to
the third score.
The Yearlings scored first, going
60 yards in 9 plays after the open
ing kickoff. On the seventh play,
Fondren dashed for 12 at right end
to the Fish 31, then two plays
later went 26 off right tackle for
the score. Fullback John Elam
converted.
Later Texas drove from its 37
to the Fish 36, but Dendy inter
cepted Fondren’s pass on his 5 and
returned to the 26. From there
the Fish drove to the tieing score
in 12 plays, Crow smashing over
from the 1 early in the second
quarter. Wright’s pass to Marks,
who made a diving catch on the 2,
covered 26 yards.
THEIR LAST GAME — Twelve A&M footballers finish
their college careers Thursday against the University of
Texas. They are (top row, left to right) Don Kachtik,
Bennie Sinclair; (second row) Larry Winkler, Norb Ohlen-
dorf; (third row) Joe Schero, Sid Theriot; (fourth row)
Richard Vick, Marvin Tate; (fifth row) Billy McGowan,
Charlie Hall; (sixth row) Paul Kennon and Ray Barrett.
Dudley converted. The Fish also
drove to the Texas 3 and 15 but
couldn’t score.
Hall took the second half kickoff,
raced up the middle, got beautiful
blocking and, sprinted 63 yards to
the Texas 23. Crow got 3, Dudley
7, then Hall broke off tackle for
12 to the 1. He dove over center
into the end zone on the next play,
and Crow converted.
The Shorthorns drove to the Fish
17 with the kickoff, but A&M dug
in and took over on downs. Later,
Grant passed to Dendy for 13, then
faked a jump pass, faded and
threw to Hobson for. 46 yards to
the 5. Two plays later, Taylor
went over from the 1 with 15 sec
onds left in the third quarter.
Texas took the kickoff and drove
to the Aggie 1, then received a 5-
yard backfield in motion penalty,
and the Fish took over on the 7.
The next time they got the ball,
the Shorthorns marched to the
Fish 3, got an offsides penalty and
then had a fourth down pass inter
cepted on the 11.
