Ag Pass Defense, Best in U.S.,
Gels Long Drilling for Bears
The nation’s best pass defense
meets the best passer in the South
west conference Saturday, so the
Aggies had another long drill on
aerial defense yesterday.
A&M’s pass defense, first in the
country, has given up just 154
yards on 16 of 47 completions, an
avei'age of 30.8 yards a game.
N
Baylor’s Billy Hooper is way
out in front of the conference’s
passers with a record of 23 com
pletions in 42 tries for 393 yards.
His nearest rival, Duane Nutt of
SMU, trails by nearly 100 yards
but has played in only three games.
A 20-minute scrimmage between
the first team and a freshman
eleven at the end of practice high
lighted Tuesday’s drill, last heavy
session of the week for the Ca
dets.
Today the varsity is due to con
centrate on smoothing offensive
plays and its kicking game.
Defense against running plays
also got a thorough going-over yes
terday. A team of second and third
stringers scrimmaged a Fish team,
and Coach Paul Bryant appeared
more pleased with the showing of
the reserves than with any other
phase of the session.
Bryant said, “I thought the last
bunch moved pretty well. The
first bunch couldn’t score against
the freshmen, and the Baylor
freshmen beat ours 38-14, so they
must be about 38 points better
than our varsity.”
How did the defense that will
be up against the SWC’s leading
offense look? “I doubt if our de»
fense looked as good as it did
Monday,” said Bryant. “So many
times they (the freshmen) broke
clear.”
Asked if the Cadets show any
sign of a letdown for Baylor after
the loss to TCU, Bryant said,
“There isn’t a senior on this squad
that has played on a team that’s
beaten Baylor. (A&M last de
feated the Bears in 1949.) If they
don’t look like they want to give

In their five games, the Bears,
led by Hooper, have averaged
345.8 yards per game, tops in the
conference. Baylor, however, has
won only three of its games, large
ly because opponents have aver
aged 277.2 yards a game.
Hooper has had only one pass
intercepted this year. He complet
ed 9 of 18 for 244 yards and three
touchdowns last week against
Washington, scored once himself
and was named to the United Press
