A&M Garden Club
To Show Flowers
“Out of the Bookshelves” has
been chosen for the theme of the
A&M Garden club flower show to
morrow at the educational build
ing of the A&M Presbyterian
church.
The show will be open to the
public from 4 to 8 p.' m. Wednes
day. Co-chairmen are Mrs. Sidney
Loveless and Mrs. W. W. Armi-
stead.
Highlight of the show will be
an exhibit arranged by A. F. De-
Worth, L. J. Tolle and Robert F.
White of the floriculture and land
scape architecture department.
This exhibit was first shown at
the international flower show re
cently held in Houston.
In the arrangements division of
the show, each class has the title
of a book as its theme.
Each class in the show and their
sponsors are “So Big”, Mrs. Robert
L. Darwall; “Silver Chalice”, Mrs.
Thomas B. Costain; “Flow to the
Leaf”, Mrs. J. D. Lindsay; “Great
Expectations,” Mrs. Bill Mogford.
Also “Flowers and Table Set
tings”, Mrs. E. D. Parnell; “The
Home Place”, Mrs. Joe Davis;
“Hold Autumn in Your Hand”, Mrs.
C. W. Pewthers; “Strange Fruit”,
Mrs. Arthur E. Carter; “For Men
Only”, Mrs. George Potter.
Also “Try and Stop Me,” Mrs.
A. R. Burgess; “Crescent Carni
val”, Mrs. J. G. McGuire; and “In
Defense of Pink”, Mrs. John Floyd.
The “For Men Only” is open to
men of College Station and A&M.
Garden club members will not be
allowed to compete in this class.
The third division of the show
will be the horticulture division and
Avill be handled by Mrs. R. E.
Snuggs and Mrs. R. E. Schiller.
All materials for this section
must be grown by the exhibitor.
Classes include roses; iris; bulbs,
corms and tubers; annuals, peren
nials; vines, shrubs, fruits and
vegetables, potted plants, and col
lections of six or more varities of
garden flowers.
There will also be a special men’s
horticulture class.
Exhibitors are allowed only one
entry in each arrangement class
but may enter as many classes as
desired.

Lt. Childs
Are Engaged
The engagement of Miss
Thelma Ruth Stephens to Lt.
John Oakley Childs, ’53, has
been announced by her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold L.
Stephens of Leesville, La.
Childs, a graduate of Jackson
ville high school, received his BS
degree in mechanical engineering.
He was senior yell leader and a
cadet captain. He is now in the
Basic Infantry Officers corps at
Ft. Benning. Ga.

With Dinner
The Bryan-College Civic Music
association launched its Member
ship campaign with a “Kick-off
Dinner” last night at the Maggie
Parker Dining hall for about a hun
dred workers.
Ernest Langford, Mayor of Col
lege Station, issued a proclamation
to proclaim the week of April 5
as Civic Music Week in College
Station and urge the support of
the Civic Music plan by the citi
zens of College Station.
Frank Coulter, president, presid
ed and Dr. Harry Rankin gave the
invocation. Mrs. R. Henry Har
rison, dinner chairman, decorated
the tables with spring flowers and
cock figurines.
Mrs. Irma Davis, National Rep
resentative from Civic Concert
Service, told the Civic Music plan
to be sure everyone was familiar
with its workings. She said it
cannot be stressed enough that
Civic Music is entirely non-profit
and cooperative, require no guar
antors and incur no deficits. The
Civic Concert Service acts as an
agent for the nationally-known art
ists who support it.
Funds from membership dues are
deposited in local banks. The
amount necessary for operating
expense such as auditorium rental,
postage, express, etc, is set aside,
and the entire balance is used in
engaging artists.
Mrs. Jesse Coon, campaign chair
man, gave instructions and sugges
tions to the workers and answered
their questions concerning the cam
paign and association.
The president gave a talk to spur
the association on to greater con
certs this year and reminded the
group that a membership card is
good wherever there is a Civic
Music Association if a seat is avail
able. The ticket price is adults
$6.00, student, enlisted men oi
service men with rank below staff
sergeant, $3.00. He then gave
plea for more workers in every
capacity to put the membership
drive over the top.
County Women
Attend Meeting
Twenty-seven Brazos county wo
men were among the 158 women
who attended a meeting of the
Texas Home Demonstration as
sociation for district 11 Thursday
and Friday at the Memorial Stu
dent Center.
Featured speakers were Miss
Maurine Hearn, state home demon
stration agent, and Dr. A. T. Dyal,
pastor of the First Presbyterian
church of Bryan.
Attending from Brazos county
were Misses Hearn, Gladys Martin,
Kate Adele Hill and Emily Ritter.
Also Mesdames Guy Neeley,
Sterling Abbott, R. R. Newcomb,
G. L. Outlaw, P. K. Trant, Joe
Fickey, R. J. Fickey, Will Presnal,
L. P. Coffey, and Morris Tatum.

Thelma Ruth Stephens
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Oakley H. Childs of Jacksonville.
The wedding will be solemnized
in the First Baptist church of
Leesville, May 15 at 8 p. m.
Miss Stephens is a graduate of
Leesville high school and received
her BA degree in elementary edu
cation from Northwestern state
college at Natchitoches, La.
She was a member of BSU
councils, Sigma Sigma Sigma so
cial sorority and Kappa Delta Pi
honorary fraternity. She is now
teaching in Leesville elementally
school.
A one-act play, “The Terrible
Meek,” by Charles R. Kennedy, will
be presented by the Wesley Players
of the A&M Methodist Church at
7:15 p. m. Wednesday night.
Aubrey Smith is cast in the
role of a soldier. The Captain is
played by Harold Fox and Kathryn
Smith is the Woman.

“What Shall I Do With Jesus—
Try Him?” will be the sermon
topic for the Lenten service at 7:15
p. m. Thursday, April 8 at Our
Saviour’s Lutheran, Church.
There will be a meeting of
Lutheran Student association at
7:15 p. m. Wednesday. The theme
of the program led by Alan Soefje
will be “Opportunities for Summer
Service.”

Paik at 7:30 p. m. Wednesday. The
student group Will meet in the

by the sophomores will be held at

Official Notice
REGALIA FOR COMMENCEMENT
For the Commencement Ekercises and
Baccalaurete Service in accordance with
action taken earlier by the Academic
Council, all non-military students who are
candidates for degrees will wear academic
regalia. Candidates for the Ph.D. degree
and candidates for the degree of Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine will wear the Doctor
cap and gown. . Candidates for the Mas
ter’s and professional degrees will wear
the Master’s cap and gown, and those re
ceiving the Bachelor’s degree will wear
the Bachelor’s cap and gown. All military
students who are candidates for degrees
will wear Uniform No. 1.
Candidates for the Ph.D. degree are re
quired also to have a hood. This will not
be worn in the procession since all Ph.D
candidates will be hooded on the stage.
All faculty members above the rank of
instructor are expected to attend the Com
mencement Exercises unless excused by
their deans. Those with the Doctor’s de
gree will wear cap, gown and hood. The
wearing of the Master’s or Bachelor’s hood
Is optional for other members of the in
structional staff.
The academic regalia can be rented from
the Exchange Store on or before April 30
but It is desirable that orders be placed
as sqgn as possible. Rental fees cover the
use of the regalia by the faculty for the
Inauguration as well as for Commencement
and Baccalaureate services. The rental fee
is J3.90 for Doctor’s cap and gown. $3.60
for Master’s cap and gown, and $3.30 for
Bachelor’s cap and gown. The rental fees
for hoods are the same aa those shown for

The executive board of the Braz
os county chapter of the Texas
State College for Women alumnae
association made plans for the
final meeting of the year at the
board meeting Thursday night.
The meeting was held at the
home of Mrs. Carl W. Landiss,
chapter president.
The May 10 meeting will be held
at the home of Mrs. Tom King,
2011 Echols.
Special guests Thursday night
were Mrs. Emmett Wallace and
Mrs. Glen X!. Green. Board mem
bers present were Mrs. Landiss,
Mrs. Pat Newton, Mrs. H. T.
Downard, Mrs. Tom King arid Mrs.

Mrs. Newton, official delegate
from the chapter to the alumnae

report of that meeting.
