\ Page 4 THE BATTALION Wednesday, October 21, 195S THE BATTAUOM-MSC Quarterbacks Select Don Ellis Is Chosen Back of the Week Don Ellis, Aggie senior quarterback, is the Quarterback club choice for back of the week for his outstanding play in the Aggie-Horned Frog game Saturday in Fort Worth. Ellis scored two touchdowns and handed off to Don Kachtik for the third figure in all of the Aggie touchdowns. He called a near-perfect game, mixing the running and pass ing plays so well that the Frogs were never sure what type of play to expect next. Ellis ran 19 yards to score in the second period on a play that started out to be a pass, then later in the same period called on Don Kachtik to go up the middle on a delayed buck when Ellis spotted the TCU linemen coming straight in on the previous play. He handed off to Kachtik on a delayed buck and Kachtik bumped aside a couple of Frog tacklers as the TCU defense was spread for the pass which was supposed to develop. The play netted 42 yards and a touchdown. Ellis passed 13 times against the Frogs and completed 5 for 58 yards, and had one pass intercepted. He ran the ball 15 times and gained 01 yards, but lost 26 yards on two pass plays which never developed, giving him a net gain of 35 yards and a 2.3 average. As a result of Saturday’s game, Ellis leads the official conference statistics in three departments. 'Hs is the leading passer with 43 completions in 83 attempts for 442 yards and three touchdowns. He has had five tosses intercepted. Ellis also leads in pass interceptions with three returned for 86 yards, and in points scored with five touchdowns anil one conversion for a total of 31 points. He is second in total offense, with 529 yards rushing and passing, nine yards less than Lamar McHan of Arkansas. It was hard to single out one man in the Aggie line which smothered the Frogs without a first down in the first half. That rock-like defense held TCU to 45 yards rushing in the first half and 92 in the entire game. But Broussard’s spec tacular linebacking and devastating blocking makes* him a good choice. It was Broussard who turned in the block that took out the only Frog who had a chance to get Don Ellis on his 19 yard scoring dash in the first quarter. Broussard knocked down Malcolm Wallace at the 10-yard line. Several times Broussard crashed through from his line backer post to put tremendous pressure on TCU’s rushers. Fred was almost always the bottom man in the pile on the rare occasions when the Frogs got past the line. Despite his size (6 feet 2, 215 pounds) Broussard often leads the Aggie downfield blocking. Several times this sea son he has broken backs into the clear for long gains. Broussard was the best lineman on the field the night of the Georgia game. The Dallas Morning News named him Southwest conference lineman of the week for his perform ance. Originally a tackle, Broussard was moved to center in spring training in an attempt to fill the hole left by Leo Marquette’s departure to the army. An all-state center at DeQuincy, La., Fred lettered three years in football and earned nine athletic letters. He lettered two years each in basketball, baseball and track. Coody Called One of Best Jerry Coody, Baylor halfback, has been called one of the finest all-around backs in the nation. A power runner and speedster combined, Coody is also a fine de fensive player. “He is one of the most rugged competitors I have ever coached and one of the most effective blockers I’ve ever known,” said Baylor coach, George Sauer. Coody has gained 186 yards rush ing in 49 carries this season for a 3.8 yard average. lie has scored 19 points on three touchdowns and one extra point for fourth place in the conference. A 185 pound senior, Coody gain ed 452 yards on 107 camies for a 4.2 yard average in 1952. He caught 12 passes for 142 yards and scored nine touchdowns. '*»'-tv. Jerry Coody Bryan ” T.
