New Buildings*, Paving
l^hange A&M Campus
Returning students will find an |
almost new campus this year.
New streets and new buildings
will greet the students upon their
arrival this week.
The multi-million dollar build
ing boom, which began in 1948
with the construction of the Me
morial Student Center, is tapering
off. Most of the building program
has either been completed or is in
its final stages.
Twenty-four thousand square
yards of new paving has been com-
pleted at a cost of $139,000. A
four-lane road now connects the
circle and Bizzell St., which runs
behind the old horse barns, con
necting with the street in front of
dormitories 1 and 2.
Another improvement is the wid
ening and paving of Throckmorton
St., which runs in front of the
chancellor’s home west of the new
area, to the end of the new area
drill field. Future plans include
the paving of Jersey St., running
Davis Warns Of
‘Fear Discipline’
Discipline in the Corps of Cadets
must not be established on fear,
said Col. Joe E. Davis, comman
dant, yesterday in a speech to ca
det commanders.
“We must use persuasion rather
than the board,” Davis said.
One factor in choosing comman
ders this year was the belief that
they would follow and carry out
college regulations, he added.
Speaking of discipline by fear
and violation of college regulations,
Davis said, “I cannot and will not
condone such practices by Cadets.”
Davis also expressed the hope
that the commanders would use
judgment in disciplining cadets and
Hot permit a person to hand out
demerits and extra duty hours
fv'ithout good reason.
There was too much conflict be
tween branches and services in the
corps last year, he said.
“We are all Aggies and one
corps,” he added.
“If the commanders will instill
loyalty and the inherent virtues of
A&M in the cadets, I will not
worry about my future or theirs,”
Davis said.
in front of A&M Consolidated high
school.
A new veterinary hospital has
been built west of the campus
across the tracks. The building,
costing nearly $700,000, contains
classrooms plus complete facilities
for diagnosis and treatment of all
kinds of animals. The hospital and
stable contain approximately 40,000
square feet, said W. W. Armistead,
dean of veterinary medicine.
The old horse barns have been
renovated and will house the agri
cultural information offices.
The local steel strike has held
up completion of the new field
house and the Kyle field press box
and seating addition. This proj
ect will be completed by the first
home game, except for the press
box.
Buildings that are to be re
moved from the campus are Ross
Hall and the pre-fabricated build
ings in vet village. Pfeuffer hall
will be torn down. Other campus
improvements are the painting and
repair of Bizzell, Milner, and
Mitchell halls, dormitories 1, 3, 5,
7 and 11, the Physics building, Ex
change store, collegq hospital, li
brary, Academic building and the
Civil Engineering building.
