PANHANDLE SNOW—Jane Brissman (left) and her sis
ter, Barbara Ann, leave their house to play in the snow. The
white blanket across the Panhandle measured up to 10
inches at Amarillo, where the children live.
HIGH TUMBLEWEED—Winds which reached 50 miles an
hour in Midland swept this giant tumbleweed to a high
perch. It was carried up the guy wire and lodged on a

BIGGEST BARGE—The W. M. Keck, Sr., world’s biggest drilling barge, sails down the
Sabine River from the Levingston shipyards at Orange, where it was built for the Super
ior Oil Company. The Keck is capable of sinking a hole 25,000 feet—deeper than man
has ever probed the earth before. The remainder of the derrick will be put up after the
barge reaches its first oil well drilling location in the Louisiana marshes.

OLDEST VET—Col. Walter L. Williams (right), 310-year-
old Confederate veteran, is interviewed by Associated Press
writer Wilbur Martin (center) at Williams’ farm home near
Eaton as a great-granddaughter looks on. Williams, the
nations oldest Confederate veteran, says that Christmas is
a time to relax and have fun, so he and his 78-year-old wife
plan to take their first airplane ride during the holidays.
He also plans to go fox hunting with his sons. Twelve of
his 19 children are still living.

' Hi yen cooked on the top of
a barracks stove, bacon smells and tastes
like home to hungry American marines.
But these men are a long, long way from
home. For they’re doing their part in
one of America’s distant outposts to
keep the peace for the rest of us.
Most of us are not asked to
wear our country’s uniform to help her
keep the peace. But a great many of us
are doing our part in our own way when
we invest in United States Defense
Bonds. For by Bonds and other forms of
saving we’re building up our personal
prosperity and security. And when we’re
financially secure we’re building up
America’s economic strength just as
surely as the marines in this picture are
supporting her military strength. We
must never forget that peace is only for
the strong!
Are you one of the patriotic
and thrifty Americans saving through
Defense Bonds regularly? If you’re not,
why not start now? Invest in Bonds sys
tematically through the Payroll Savings
Plan where you work. Seven million
Americans say it’s one sure way to save
—because it saves something out of every
check before you have a chance to spend
it. And you know, no matter how small
your income you can’t afford not to save
something for yourself! So join the Plan
today. Strengthen your own future and
that of your country by saving your
money through Bonds.
Here’s how E Bonds
now earn more money for you!
Now safe, sure U. S. Series E Defense Bonds

maturity.
2 Every Series E Bond you own can now go on
