Thursday, October 23, 1952 THE BATTALION Page 5 Outside the Conference Upsets Due In Grid Program By GUS BECKER Associate Sports Editor Becker There will be a shakeup in the rankings after this week end of football is over, although the leaders, Michigan State, Maryland, and Oklahoma will stay in the first three positions. It will be a week-end of upsets and runaways with the biggest shock coming from the West Coast where Southern California’s Trojans will upset the California Golden Bears. Both teams have a perfect record of five straight wins although the Golden Bears are ranked as the number four team in the nation while the Trojans are rated as the num ber seventh squad. It will be too much defense for the Cal- fornia Blue and Gold with the Trojans upsetting them in a bid for the Rose Bowl, 13 to 6. Another Reverse Co. C Rolls Over Fish Band 31-0 READY . . . AIM . . . Firing against Baylor this weekend will be the A&M Rifle team. They won over TCU last week in a match held Saturday morning at the indoor rifle range in Kyle Field. Last year this team won national recognition for their sharp shooting. Another reverse will take place in the South as the. Virginia Cav aliers down the mighty Blue Devils of Duke. The Orange and Blue Cavaliers have been underrated all season and will surprise the Duke Blue and White 21 to 6. The Midshipmen of the Naval Academy were trampled by the Terrapins last week, but they will bounce back and down the Penn sylvania Quakers in another sur prise, 21 to 14. Pittsburgs’ Panthers ax-e due to be stunned by the Mountaineei's from West Virginia. The Blue and Gold Panthers are highly rated although beaten by the Sooners while the Gold and Blue Moun taineers ai’e . not even I’anked. The Panthers figure to be overconfi dent and upset by the Mountain eers, 13 to 7. Notre Dames’ Fighting Irish have been up and down all season arid after their upset of Purdue last week, are due for an upset themselves. Lowly Noi'th Caro- linas’ Tarheels will do the trick on the Irish Blue and Gold, 14 to 7. In the Bag: (Seemingly) Michigan State over Penn State Maryland over LSU Geox-gia Tech over Vanderbilt Wisconsin over UCLA Tennessee over Woffoi’d Oklahoma Rolls On Oklahoma meets the Kansas State Wildcats, and with the com petition not as good as it has been the Sooners don’t figure to be as good as usual. The Crimson and Cream Oklahoma team won’t have too much trouble .bat should n’t i-un up as big a score, taking the Pux-ple and White Wildcats, 13 to 0. Ohio State is another that won’t have trouble as it takes on the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Scarlet and Grey Buckeyes of Ohio State have improved steadily as the season has progi’essed and will hand the Gold and Black Hawkeyes a 26 to 12 setback. Michigan, another Big Ten elev en that has won steadily since an opening loss to Michigaxx State, meet the spoilers, the Minnesota Gophers. The Maroon and Gold Gophers ai’e capable of beating most teams in the Big Ten, but won’t turn the trick against the Wolverines. The Maize and Blue of Michigan will take a close one, 19 to 13.
