Letters
(Continued from Page 2)
This it not'true. You are not in
the Army, You ax-e in a ti'aining
program for reserve officex-s. And
don’t think you are “in the sei'-
vice moi’e tha,n the sei'vicemen.”
Granted, you may have sci'atched
your knee the other day, you
must consider the moxe than 100,-
OQO casualties in Korea befoi’e
making such a statement.
Concerning the price of meals
in the coi-ps mess halls you said:
“ . . . we in the corps pay for
pai’t of our meals, that doesn’t
cover the entire amount spent by
the college for food. The diffex 1 -
ence is made up by the govern
ment. The government is getting
soldiex-s out of us, so it sees fit
to feed us, but what will it be get
ting from the non-i - egs?”
Let me call to your attention
that the mess halls receive no sub
sidies from any source, especially
the U. S. Government. It is a self-
English Club Holds
Organization Meet
The English Majors Club held
its oi'ganizational meeting Tues
day night in the YMCA after yell
practice.
Elected for the coming, year,
were Bex*t Wellex-, president, Hugh
Mangum, seci'etai*y> and Bob Hol
land, Junior x-epi’esentativc to the
Arts and Sciences Student Coun
cil.
Following election of officex*s,
pi'ogram topics for the coming
year wei - e discussed. Bob Dannen-
baum and Hugh Mangum were ap
pointed to investigate the px*oposed
programs and recommend one to
be cai’iied out.
Di\ S. S. Morgan sti'essed dux*-
ing the meeting the fact that the
English Club is not for majoi-s in
English only, but is open to all
persons intei’ested in philosophy,
literature, religion, and other re
lated subjects.
Poultry Judgers
Louisiana Bound
The A&M Poultx-y Judging
Team left College Station today
for Shreveport, La. to assist in
judging at the Louisiana State
Fail*.
This fair is one of the largest
junior shows in the nation. Mem
bers of the team ax*e expected to
get good practice on “Reds”, New
Hampshii'C, and White Rock chick
ens. This fair is a px-eliminary
for the National Judging Contest
at Chicago.
The team consists of Bill Huff
man, Roy Johnson, Henry Shurig,
Bill Cowley, and Johnny Peirson.
Enrollment Drops
Below ’51 - ’52 Level
Eni'ollment this year is slightly
lower than the number registex*ed
at this time last year. At present,
the enrollment of students pursu
ing degi'ees is 6>277, including 1,547
entering freshmen and 312 college
transfers.
For the same date last year the
enrollment was 6,583 including
1,767 freshmen and 373 college
transf«rs.
Students Enroll
In Dance Classes
Dance classes for students in
terested in ball room and Latin
American dancing, 31*6 being con
ducted in the MSC by Mr. and
Mx*s. Maiming Smith.
Miss Betty Bolander, MSC pro
gram consultant, announced that
all classes have been filled with
an enrollment of over 200 students.
The classes are being sponsored
by the MSC Dance Committee un
der the direetion of Boyce Holmes,
senior from Corpus Christi.
suppox*ting non-px*ofit pax*t of the
college.
In x*eply to your question, “What
will it (the goveimment) get out of
the non-x*egs “I can only say that
if you had been at this school a
little longer or knew a little mox*e
about A&M you would never ask
such a question. Thex*e ax*e many
men in the non-regs who have
ali*eady completed their militaxy
txaining here at A&M and will i*e-
ceive commissions in Januai*y or
June ’53.
Think of the Aggies hei*e who
have already seen mox*e combat
seiwice than a lot of the Aggies
now in school will see. Also thex*e
is a large percentage that will
soon be in the Army and on the
front lines, who will not be weax*-
ing the baxs or enjoy the pxivi-
leges you will get after gradua
tion. How can you ask “What will
it be getting from the non-regs?”
You said, “ . . . where as col
lege regulations prevent undex*-
classmen from living off the cam
pus, I don’t believe there is any
thing about uppeielassmen or non-
regs rooming off the campus. If
you don’t like the campus as the
rest of us seem to do why don’t
you txy that?”
In only exceptionally special
cases axe men permitted to live
off the campus unless they axe
maiTied or axe living with their
paxents. Crowded living conditions
is not enough reason to obtain
permission. You . should take this
matter up with Dean Morgan or
Bennie jZinn if you axe really con-
cexmed about it.
“Like the campus as the rest of
us seem to do ...” You knowf
less about the school than the avex*-
age sophomore to be voicing opin
ions and criticizing the non-regs.
Your lack of knowledge and
complete invalidity of your letter
can be overlooked to a very small
extent when it is known you are,
a transfer or a so called “super
charged” junior, blit still I must? ?
apoligize to the readers of The.
Battalion for the misleading letter-
you wrote.
