THE BATTALION
OUTSIDE THE CONFERENCE
Mich. State
To Win Again
By GUS BECKER
Associate Sports Editor
Michigan State’s mighty Spartans will
continue to be the number one team in the
nation although they may not have as easy
Becker time with SyracuseUniversity as they had
with the Aggies last week-end.
The Orangemen from Syracuse have won their last three
games and have a good running attack sparked by a hard
hitting halfback.
It will be too much power and passing for the Spartans
as the Orangemen meet the best squad in the midwest.
The Spartans may slack off after last week’s perform
ance but they have a knack of winning, Michigan State by
two touchdowns, 21 to 6.
Terrapins In Top Game
A feature game of the after
noon will pit the second team in
the national rankings, Maryland’s
Terrapins, against unbeaten Navy.
Navy, a surprise this season
could give the Terrapins a rough
afternoon, but the Maryland squad
after a poor start has been gain
ing momentum and will win by a
one touchdown margin.
The Terrapins have averaged
over 400 yards per game while
the Middies have given their foes
9hly 121 yards per contest, mean
ing that it will be power against
‘'a \briek wall.
Another fact pointing to this
conclusion is that almost 300 yards
of the Terrapins total yardage has
been on the gi*ound while Navy has
limited its foes to only 26 yards
on the ground per contest.
Maryland will take to the air
to take the Middies, in a bruis
ing battle, 14 to 7.
Califomia’s Golden Bears face
a tough Santa Clara eleven at Bei'-
keley, California, and will roll on
as the leading west coast team.
The Brones are out of their class,
while the Johnny Olzweski led
Golden Bears are seeking a Rose
Bowl bid. An easy one for the Cal
ifornia machine, 28 to 0.
Sooners Meet Kansas
The top game in the southwest
sees unbeaten but tied, Oklahoma’s
Sooners tangle with their Big
Seven conference rival, the Jay-
hawkers from Kansas.
Oklahoma was scared in their
opener by Colorado who held them
to a 21-21 tie, while the Jayhawk-
ers have had no trouble from any
of their foes.
The Sooners like Maryland have
since run over everything in their
path and although the battle will
take place on the Jayhawkers
home field, the Oklahoman’s will
come out on top, 20 to 14.
In the bag, (supposedly) :
Georgia Tech over Auburn
Duke over North Carolina St.
Purdue over Notre Dame
Virginia over V. M. I.
Ohio State over Wash. State
Illinois over Minnesota
Alabama over Tennessee
Bruins A Toss-Up
A feature tilt for the west coast
fans will be the U. C. L. A. Bruins
clash with the Stanford Indians in
the Los Angeles Coliseum.
The Bruins are ranked 10 in
the nation while the Indian’s are
holding down the number 13 spot
in the poll.
It looks like a strictly toss-up
affair with the Bruins’ home field
advantage making the difference,
Bruins winning 7 to 0.
Another west coast affair fea
tures the Southern California Tro
jans against the Oregon State Bea
vers, which has the makings of a
low scoring contest.
The Beavers’ passing attack will
be too much for the Trojans how
ever, with the Oregan State squad
flying past the Trojans, 18 to 14.
Wisconsin, number one in the
nation last week fell to 12 when
the Ohio State Buckeyes’ defeat*
ed them crushing their Rose Bowl
hopes. The Badgers will try to
regain face against the Iowa
Hawkeyes.
The Hawkeyes will pull an upset
on the Badgers, using a stubborn
offense and take the Wisconsin
lads, 14 to 12.
Quakers Upset Victims
Pennsylvania will be the victim
of an upset by the Columbia Lions
who will begin another string of
victories on their own home field...
A blow to the Houston fans will
be the defeat of the. Cougars by
the Arizona State of Tempe’s Sun
Devils. The mighty Cougar defense
won’t be able to bottle up the red
hot Sun Devils on their own stomp
ing grounds. The Sun Devils by
two TD’s, 13 to 0.
....LUS’s powerhouse is riding high
for a fall and the Georgia Bull
dogs look like a rock in the road.
The Tigers will be -playing at
home which gives them an advan
tage, but the Bulldogs have the of
fense. Bulldogs in a close one, 7
to 6.
