Wednesday, March 19, 1952 THE BATTALION Page 3 A&M to Hold SWC Swim Meet Preliminaries Start Tomorrow By JIM ASHLOCK Battalion Sports Writer A&M’s swimming team closes out its 1952 schedule with the SWC meet here Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Only four SWC schools have swimming teams, these being Texas University, Bay lor, SMU, and A&M. w Texas was the winner of the 1951 conference meet with 120 points. The Aggies followed in .second place with 100 points, ^ while SMU finished third with 95 and Baylor fell fourth with 9 „ points. Top Competitors Three A&M seniors, Ralph El lis, Van Adamson, and Bill Sar gent ax-e classed among the top competitors, in the meet Ellis . favored in the 100-yard and 200- yard freestyle events, and Adam son in the 220 yard and 440 .yai’d freestyles and 200-yard individual . medley. Sargent is among the best in the backstroke and 200-yard in dividual medley. For the Longhorns either Wy- nant Wilson, Alberto Yriart or Ed die Humphreys could take the 1500 meter freestyle, but they will be competing against the win ner of this event last season, Ar den Amerine of SMU. The 50-yard freestyle finds TU, A&M, and SMU all entering top men. For the Aggies, Ellis, with Bill Farrell carrying SMU hopes and Roger Tolar swimming' for TU. and conference diving champion Skippy Browning, Texas is every one’s favorite to take diving hon ors. Texas is further strengthened in this event by Bobby Broadneaux. TU’s combination of Tolar, Hoff, and Wilson is expected to emerge with 400-yard freestyle relay lau rels, with SMU classed as the only close competition. Ellis is one of the favored four in the 100-yard freestyle, rating alond with SMU’s Bill Farrell -and Longhorns Toar and Wilson. Amerine is again entered in the 440-yard freestyle, which he won for the Mustangs last season. At tempting to claim this honor will be Adamson, and a TU trio of Wil son, Humphreys, and Yriart. Two Cadets, Adamson and Sar gent will be out for the 200-yard individual medley crown, which they hope to win in spite of the ef forts of Wilson and SMU’s Albert Killgoi-e. In the final event, the 300-yard medley relay, Texas and SMU are the favorites. The meeting will get underway at 7 p. m. Thursday with the pre liminaries in 1500 meter relay. 2:30 p. m. Friday is the sche duled time for the preliminaries in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 220-yard freestyle, 200- yard breaststroke, one meter div ing, and 400-yard freestyle relay. Finals in these six events will be held starting at 7 p. m. Friday night. The preliminaries for the other seven events, the 100-yard back- stroke, 3 meter diving, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard medley re lay will be held Satui’day after noon with the finals scheduled for Saturday night. SMU Stars Ricks Wilson captured first place honors for SMU in both the 100 yard and 200 yard backstroke in the contest, and will be back for the Mustangs this year. Most like ly to topple him from his high positiion is either teammate Les Beddoes or Mike Shirley of Texas. Cadet Adamson should take first in the 220-yard freestyle, but SMU’s_ Amerine and TU’s Wilson Will provide able competition for the Aggie speedster. S-MU once again placed high on--- the expectation list in the 200- yard breaststroke, with Texas also rating favorable comment. Mus tang Tom Gale and Bob Bollen will be matched against the Long- i horn’s Buddy Hoyt, with the same i ratings applying in the 100 yard breaststroke. With the support of their NCAA A&M SWIMMING TEAM—This 24-man strong team will represent the Aggies in the annual Southwest Conference Swimming Meet starting Thursday in P. L. Downs Natatorium. A triangular meet be tween Rice, Texas and A&M will be repeated. Last week the Aggies rolled up 101 points to stomp Texas, scor ing 58 and Rice with 11. The Owls were shut out in the Border Olym pics. Tfie Aggies captured 10 first places, 11 seconds and scored in every event except the 100 and 220- yard sprints. Cadets Favored Because of their past perform ances the Cadets will be favored t6 win again. The outcome of this week’s meet should not vary much from last Saturday. The Cadets, with talent and depth in every event will be led by their outstanding weight man Harrow Hooper'. Hooper is expected to continue his unbeaten ways Saturday, he threw the shot 53 ft. and tossed the discus 149 ft. 8% in. Added strength was gained when’ A&M’s Glenn Spradlin vaulted 13 ft. 7 in. in one of the outstanding performances last Saturday. The only upsets during the Rice- Texas meet were within the Ag gies themselves. In a mild upset John Garmany slipped by sophomore Jim Blaine in the mile ram with a fine time of 3:22.5. Garmany, a senior, was the top A&M miler last season but had been beaten repeatedly this year by Blaine. Another upset was J. A. Terry’s [win over E. Wilmsen in the880 in the good "time of 1:56.9. ! Cadets Face Ohio In 3-Game Series Aggie diamondmlen will tangle again with the often played Ohio State Buckeyes, coached by for mer Aggie baseball and basket ball coacb Marty Karow Thursday. The northern squad will stay at A&M for a three game series starting Thursday on the varsity field. The Buckeyes played here last year and also met the Aggies in a post-season play-off for NCAA honors in Omaha, Neb., last June with Aggies wiftning 3-2. Karow’s crew will be facing much the same lineup they saw when the Aggies knocked the Buckeyes out of the running in the NCAA meet. . Back are men like Lale Lary, A1 Ogletree, Hank Candelari, Joe Ecrette, Bill Mun- nerlyn and Bob Tankersley. Rounding out the possible etart- ing lineup for the Aggies will be Charlie Russell and Carl Menger with Lary in the outfield. Ag Golfers Prepare For Rice Meet Charlie Leissner, a sophomore, seems to have the inside on the shortstop post vacated when all- NCAA, all-SWC Guy Wallace com pleted his eligibility. Leissner possibly will be joined in the infield by Munnerlyn at first, Ecrette at second, and team captaint Candelari at third. Either Ogletree or Martin Ham ilton will get the startling nod behind the mask. Coach Bell will pick his start ing pitchers from Helvin Work, Tankersley, Ernie Johnson, and possibly Louis Little. Relief work will be handled by Bill Stirling, James Cook, and Sid Goodloe. Karow Starters Karow probably will start Ed Bohnslav, Paul Williams and Dave Bechtel in each of the games as his pitcher. Their relief could come from eight other moundsmen listed on the Buckeye roster. Behind the plate will be Jack Gannon, junibr lettermen, wth re lief coming in the form of Bill Wisler, up from the B-squad. Infielders probably will be Bill Sachs at first base, Dave Leonhard at second, Jack Jones at shortstop witch Charles Brontlinger or Bob Blanchard at third. One match will be played be tween the, varsity members and the other between the varsity and freshman squads. The contests will determine those players who will participate against Rice. In last week’s match with the University of Houston, Fagan said Johnny Barett and Malcolm Doug lass played a very good game; however, J. C. Fletcher and Jimmy Renolds were not up to par.
