Thursday, February 21, 1952 THE BATTALION Page 5 Dames Club Wife National Student! Here By PEGGY MADDOX Battalion Women’s Editor One of the two student’s wives dubs open to all Aggie Avives, and the only student wife organization ■with a national charter, is the Dames Club. The Texas A&M Chapter of the Dames Club was started in April, 1950 and has grown to a member ship of about 50 through the ef forts of Mrs. Ide P. Trotter, who is now a sponsor of the club. Mrs. R. D. Lewis and Mrs. A. D. Fol- wciler are also sponsors. The local organization is one of 61 groups Scattered on college and univer sity campuses over the United States. The first chapter was or ganized at the University of Chi- jjg^o in 1921. ^iWrhe primary purpose of the club is to provide social and culture contacts for the wives of students. The fulfillment of this purpose can be seen through the program sche dule. In the fall the Dames viewed a style show’, were briefed on par liamentary law% and heard a ped iatrician discuss child care and childhood problems. The members enjoyed bridge and canasta occas ionally and in December had a Christmas party for their hus bands. Book Reviews A book review opened the spring programs; however, on the future schedule is a home economist, mus ical artist, interior decorator, tw r o bridge and canasta parties, and a family picnic. Meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of cverv month in the Cabinet room of the YMCA. The national symbol is the wed ding ring pierced by an arrow, the wedding ring representing the marital status of the members, and the arrow for friendship. National theme is “Once a Dame, Always a Dame.” The only provision for joining the club is that the pros pective member’s husband be en rolled in a college or university. In rare instances, the mother of a student may join the group. In all cases, membership is opened only to married women. After membership is attained it may be transferred to any club in the country, even after the. husband is no longer connected with a col lege. In fact, they intend to settle in the West, maybe California. Dick is a me chanical engineering major and a distinguished student. If a student is in the School of Arts and Sciences, Dean J. P. Abbott gives the card to the stu dent personally. The School of Ag riculture mails the cards to the student before registration. The School of Veterinary Medi cine has two ways of giving the cards to students. All the pre-vet students also get cards by mail, accompanied by a letter. Those stu dents in veterinary medicine re ceived DS cards from Dean I. B. Boughton at a meeting of the Jun ior American Veterinai*y Associa tion Feb. 12. DS Cards were given to engi neering students when they regis tered for the spring semester. However, there are a few students Who have not picked up cards. The Basic Division mailed about 100 cards Wednesday. Almost two thirds of the students in the Basic Division have not picked up their cards.
