Rare Disease Kills Experimental ’Coon Anthrax, a deadly blood infec tion which commonly affects cattle, recently caused the death of a racoon being’ used for experimen tal purposes, said Dr. H. A. Smith, head of the veterinary pathology department. Two other racoons that died at the same time are believed to have contacted this disease which is rarely found in game animals, he added. In Good Condition John E.. Wood, graduate student in the wildlife management de partment, who was experimenting with the animals said the racoons seemed in good condition the night before their death. There had been no change in their feeding or care other than they were fed a squirrel which Wood had killed. Smith believes the ’coons re ceived the disease from the squir rel meat which was probably in fected with the Anthrax germ. The cause of death was determined by such tests as the use of bacterial cultures from one ■ ’coon and the inoculation of mice with the speci mens. Anthrax, Smith explained, was one of the great human plakues Consolidated (Continued from Page J) left side of the bucket. David Bonnen, another sopho more, teams up with junior Joe Motheral at the forward positions. Bonnen prefers his shots on the right side and not too far out, while Motheral serving as either postman or forward, looks good on close jump shots. Tallest member of the team is Bobby Jackson, 6 foot 3 inch soph omore, who serves as the regular pivotman. Jackson, though some what weak on shooting and re bounding, provides the height need ed in the center area. ; The deliberate, businesslike brand of ball practiced by the Tig ers is not unlike that of the A&M College varsity. Their deadly ac curacy from the outside, coupled with a variety of well planned and practiced plays, deems them wor thy contenders for the regional crown. before serums were invented for its prevention. Known as “wool- sorters disease,” it infected work ers who gathered and sorted fresh ly sheared wool from sheep. A few years ago, several men contracted the disease from shaving brushes made of hog bristles from China. Caused by a gevm that lives from 20 to 30 years in the soil, the dis ease is hard to kill. Infected meat has to be cooked under steam pres sure to be safe for consumption Smith said. Smith said several cases of the malady have been discovered re cently in cattle in the College Sta tion vicinity. i— Junior Prom (Continued from Page 1) Harper, Dick Zeek; Program Com mittee, Gene Steed, chairman; Bob McCarley, Joel Austin, Putter Jar vis, Bruce Vanzura; Sweetheart Committee, Joe Blanchette, chair man; Danny Howell, Jack Hall; Guest Committee, Allen Pengelly, chairman; Guy Shown, Lyle Wolf- skill, Joe Pafford.
