Page "4 THE BATTALION Thursday, November 15, 1951 Outstanding In SMU Game Sliaelfer, Nohavitza Given Top Honors For SMU Tilt Elo Nohavitza For his excepional work and aggressive playing, Nohavitza has been named the outstanding offensive lineman of the week. Elo is one of the smallest lineman on the team but makes up for his size with lots of spirit, hustle, and hard work. Elo Nohavitza, the “watch charm” guard from El Campo, has been voted offensive Lineman of the Week by The Battalion for his outstanding line play in the A&M- SMU game last Saturday. The smallest guard on the squad, Nohavitza weighs 185 pounds, al though line coach Paul McMurtry claims he weighs closer to 180. Standing 5. feet ten inches tall, Nohavitza is a senior who has two varsity letters and played 104 min utes during the 1950 season, Team Leader One of the team leaders, Noha- vitz'a is also company, commander of A Athletics, and maintains an “A” and “B” scholastic average. In spite of his stature, Nohavitza is the most aggressive lineman on the Aggie Squad. He has been the starting offensive guard for all the Maroon and White games this year. Besides being a good blocker in the line, Nohavitza is able to move quickly for outside blocking. Given Honorable Mention Last year the United’ Press gave Nohavitza honorable mention for All-American, and he had been aptly described as being built like a small, but fast, tank. Coach McMurtry said, “Elo is an unheralded player, but is the type that never gives up and is still going wtien the whistle blows. Probably the best guard on pull ing out and blocking the end and downfield,” continued McMurtry, B Athletics Pass A Infantry To Top Corps Championship By JOE BLANCHETTE Battalion Intramural Writer The inevitable meeting finally came about last night but the re sults were not the expected. The athletes of B Company took the court in a fired up mood but the A Infantry quintet couldn’t match shots with the winners. The ath letes took the game, 40-19. The difference between the two clubs was a lad by the name of Mai Douglas. Douglas made the impossible shots all night to chalk up 19 points and pace the scorers. The remaining difference which is shown in the score was a boy by the name of Ed Sandlin who pi’actically lived under the back- board and gave the athletes full control of the rebounding oval. The only bright lights for the infantrymen were two cagers by the names of Charlie Smith and Harold Hudspeth. The Infantry’s usual ace, Ed Moses, was complete ly slowed up and just never could generate the steam necessary to keep the losers in the contest. Smith, on the other hand, along with Hudspeth racked up a com bined total of 14 points. Smith hit for the eight and Hudspeth for six. • • Game Begins After .the usual pre-game warm up the game started. It began in a quiet enough vein with Doug las fouling Hudspeth. Hudspeth missed the free shot and the In fantrymen blew the only chance they had to lead at least once in the game. Douglas took the throw-in from Dishman and finally maneuvered himself into the far corner and TODAY & FRIDAY sank a beautiful two-pointer. The infantrymen took the ball but could do nothing and after only one shot at the basket yielded the ball to the athlete’s Sandlin as he began his domination of the ball. Again, Douglas headed for the corner and again he sank another two-pointer to place the winners in a 4-0 lead. Sandlin followed the Douglas tal ly with a gift shot and made it with the simplicity and boredom that comes only from having made many before it. Following the Sandlin tally Jim Dishman was fouled and sank the free throw to rack up a 6-0 lead over the In fantry. Infantry Tallies Pumpkin Pybus, Infantry for ward, finally took the initiative for his club and racked up the first two points to narrow the margin to 6-2 and the fans still thought they were in for a battle royal. Dishman followed with another gift toss and the score rose 7-2. Again the bright light shown for the infantrymen and Hudspeth tal lied a set shot to narrow the mar gin to 7-4. Jerry Lasteljck took the event ual winners and champions ‘further ahead with a set shot but the in fantry was still trying gallantly to stay in the battle .and Charley TODAY LAST DAY FIRST RUN —Features. From this point on the fans set tled down and the athletes began their runaway. Sandlin hit a free shot and Douglas hit in a set shot to run the score up to 12-6. Dishman continued his fancy foot work for the night and hit on a quarter court shot. This gave the score a slightly top-heavy look of 16-6. Infantry Tries John Kreiger attempted in vain to rejuvenate the infantrymen by sinking a free shot but it was to no avail as the athletes continued to gallop at top speed. Douglas hit on a free shot and then retreated to his favorite cor ner to sink another field goal and build the score to 19-7. As the half approached Sterlmg hit on a free shot and Lestelic slip ped for a crip shot and the half time score was 22-7. One of the main reasons that Ag gie backs have been able to go for long gains this year is because No havitza is usually out in front lead ing the way. Nohavitza has been' a consistant player in all the games this year and is definite asset to the fine Ca det forward wall, he is a yard wide and has a great heart. Shaeffer Robert (Buddy) Shaeffer is The Battalion’s choice for the top de fensive man of the week for his brilliant linebacking job in the Ag gie-Mustang battle last Saturday ori Kyle Field. In the Horned Frog tilt, Shaef fer. showed the tans a preview of things to come, when he got into the game and stopped the TCU backs before they could get up steam. Outstanding TCU Game Besides his outstanding defen sive play in the TCU contest, Shaeffer caught one pass good for ten yeards. Pie intercepted one pass, recovered a Horned Frog fumble, received credit for three clean tackles and two assists. Although he didn’t start in the Baylor game, Shaeffer, made two clean tackles and six assists, be sides intercepting a Larry Isbell pass. The next week at Fayetteville, Shaeffer came in on defense stop ping plays many times behind the line of scrimmage. Snags 27 Yard Pass Playing a little more offense than usual in, the Razorback bat tle, the El Paso lad carried the pigskin one, time for one yard arid snagged a pass that went for 27 yards. Last week on Kyle Field Shaef fer was definitely the best defen sive player on the A&M squad as he made six clean tackles and 14 assists. Halfback For Two Years Shaeffer who has been a half back for the past two seasons has carried the ball only once this year since he was shifted to end. In the pass receiving depart ment, Shaeffer has caught three for 64 yards, and has intercepted two opponents aerials for four- yards. In one kickoff return this sea son Shaeffer has 16 yards and has returned one punt for one yard. Two Football Letters Besides two varsity letters in football, Shaeffer has also won a track letter.
