Texas A&M will be out to blemish Baylor’s undefeated
record in a grudge batttle at Kyle Field Saturday. This game
may decide this year’s SWC representative in the Cotton
Bowl.
None of the members of the present Aggie squad have
played on a football team that defeated the Bears. The
Bruin-Aggie clash will climax fifty years of football rivalry
between the two schools. Baylor trails in the overall series
12-29, while six contests have ended in ties.
Last year the Bears upset the Cadets 27-20 in a brutal
game. This year the Aggies, facing elimination from the
conference race, hope to “turn the tables” on Baylor.
Larry Isbell, a triple threat menace, is apparently the
man A&M will have to stop Saturday if they emerge victor
ious. Against Texas Tech Isbell completed 13 of 18 passes
for 155 yards and had only one intercepted. Two Isbell pass
es went for touchdowns and the T-magician plunged over for
another tally. Isbell leads the conference in punts, averag
ing 42 yards per kick.
Baylor has two of the finest ends in football in Stanley
Williams and Harold Riley. These lads not only can snag
every aerial thrown their way, but they can run like half
backs after the pass is completed. Riley scored two TDs
against the Aggies last year and led the SWC in pass receiv
ing, grabbing 35 passes for 539 yards. Williams is one of
Baylsr’s co-captains.
Gale Galloway, senior center of the Bruin line, is the
other co-captain of the Bears. Galloway is one of the largest
men on the squad, but he handles himself with the agility of
a halfback.
At the guard slots are John Hancock, six-foot, two inch
230-pound senior, and Charles Driver, a six foot, 185-pound
senior. Driver, who has won three football letters at Baylor,
was a high school teammate of SMU’s Benton Musslewhite
and Texas’ Paul Williams.
Dick Parma, who attended A&M for a short time, is the
Bruins’ leading fullback. Parma is a very hard-running back,
and according to press releases came out first in individual
ground-gaining duels last season with Smith of the Aggies,
Rote of SMU, and Townsend of Texas.
The tackle postions are in the talented hands of Robert
Knowles and Steve Dowden. Knowles, a six-foot, four-inch
225-pound sophomore, is one of the Bear’s most promising
linemen. Dowden, six-foot, two-inch, senior, played on Odes
sa’s 1946 championship eleven.
Don Carpenter and Jerry Goody, halfbacks, round out
the Bruin backfield. Carpenter, a junior, is doing a nice job
of filling the great Buddy Parker’s shoes this season. Goody,
a sophomore halfback from Tulsa, Oklahoma was an out
standing back on the Cub team last year,
George Sauer, Baylor mentor, was the SWC “Coach-of-
the-Year” last season. Last year Sauer took charge of a
Bear team that was doped by many to finish last, and herded
them to a second-place finish. Before coming to Baylor,
Sauer coached at. New Hampshire U., Kansas, and Annapolis,
where his Navy teams played two seasons against the tough
est schedules to be found.
