Aggies Boast Depth In Running Events By RAY HOLBROOK Battalion Sports Staff Though not as strong in the in dividual running events as in the field A&M tracksters will be favor ites to cop at least three of these and pile up a hoard of seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths in the SWC track meet Friday and Saturday on Kyle. An outstanding Aggie soph, Bill Stalter, has a good chance to win the 100 and 220 and thus be the first Aggie to win these events in over 10 years. Stalter ran a 9.8 hundred last Fri day to best Texas’ top sprinter, Floyd Rogers. Another ace Steer sprinter, Ralph Person, who has run a 9.7 this year, would probably have been the top choice had he not sustained a leg injury at the Kansas Relays. However, it looks now like Statler and Rogers will be favorites with Carl Mayes, last year’s 3rd place win ner, figuring also. A sleeper in the 100 will be Cadet James Baker who is primarily a fine quarter-miler. He took third in Aus tin last Friday and with luck on his start could easily best all competitors. Stalter is even more strongly a favorite in the 220. He has beaten all Jack Simpson . . . Atffde track captain, will be Paul Leming and Billy Bless will be seeking to take the high and low Track Meet. Both men could win, and at least * * ** J • I .41.-. ....1..^.. -1 I — 4- .. d WT / ' T> 1 ••rail Ian trying to break 14’ in the SWC i," Hies respectively this weekend in the SWC Bless will be favored. Track Meet, ,1ur Texas and Rice sprinters consistently and turned in a 21.0 last Friday for one of the best times in the nation. James Kellett of TCU and Bob by Carroll of Baylor have registered 21.2 to be regarded strong contenders and Mayes must again be figured in the race. He placed second to Texas’ Charley Parker in last year’s SWC meet, but has been slow rounding into shape this year. Even more likely to win the 220 than any other race he enters, is our converted quarter-miler dark horse, Baker, who finished right behind Stalter at Austin. An all-Aggie event for many years, the 440 again should return to Aggieland. Don Mitchell, senior letterman, has run 48.6 for the best time in the Conference and will easily be the top favorite Saturday. However, Norman Price of Arkansas, who placed second to Rice’s Tom Cox, record holder at 46.9 last Fall, will give Mitchell trouble and should make it quite a race. Three More Three more Aggies, Bob Mays, Fuston McCarty and Bernie Place appear to have the edge on other competitors and should finish in that order ahead of Texas’ Bob Eschenbere:. The Rice Owls apparently have a strangle hold on the 880 again this year with defending champion and record holder (1.53.) Otha Byid as the man to beat. Bill Graf of Rice seems to be most likely to turn the trick as the two seem to have the race to themselves. Another Cadet soph star, Ed Wilmsen, who holds early season wins over Byrd and Graff, should take third with teammate J. A. Terry close behind. Ag Robert Al len and Razorback Oliver Gatch- ell will fight it out for a place. (See SPRINT STARS, Page 6) . . . is A&M’s hope in the 440 this weekend at the SWC track meet. His time of 48.6 this year has been the best in the SWC. He will be the favorite in this event. Harrow Hooper .. . . exhibits his unusual high jump form as he easily clears a “short” 6’ 6”. At the Texas Re lays this year, the junior letter- man set a new record at that meet with a leap of 6’ 9”, the second best—by %”—in the na tion, to date, this season. ... is almost a cinch to bleak the SWC shot record of 50’ 2 l /t". Hooper is also favored in the discus. Before you ’give up' on your injector razor... We now have in stock the NEW OFFICER’S GUIDE. This new volume brings up to date the val uable features of its predecessors, and constitutes a treasure chest of helpful information and guidance. Officers of all grades and length of service, on active or inactive duty, recognize the value of having THE OFFICER’S GUIDE available for ready refer ence and wise counsel. Half a million officers have used this book in its- many editions. THE OFFI CER’S GUIDE is not, as supposed by many individ uals, a guide designed solely for junior officers. True, most junior officers.do. acquire copies early in their career as there is no substitute for this reliable and ever ready source of helpful information. However, many experienced officers of senior grade with many years of service find THE OFFICER’S GUIDE a highly useful and time saving reference. The officer’s family will also benefit by reading this comprehensive volume. Selected sections such as Army Posts and Stations, Foreign Service and Life in Oversea Commands, Customs of the Service, The Code of the Army, and Leadership help to orient your family on the military way of life. To a surprising degree the career of an officer is influenced by his wife. She can contribute most to his success if she is fully informed as to the Army’s codes, requirements, customs, and opportunities. This new edition is in tune with the situation of today and tomorrow. Considerable revision has been accomplished to incorporate important changes in regulations. Don’t get left out, come in today and get your copy today, we have only a limited stock.
