Mr. 440
Don “Jose” Mitchell
. . . leading Aggie quarter-miler
and mile relay anchorman has
been making the four curves for
A&M for the past three years.
Mitchell looks almost like a cinch
to take the 440 crown. His, best
time this year has been 48.6 (He
really is “burr-headed.”)

Mitchell Leads
Way for Aggie
Quarter-Milers
Don Mitchell, senior letter-
man from Deer Park, is the
Aggies top 440 man on this
year’s undefeated track team.
The little burr-headed
speedster is also the anchor man
on the Cadets’ undefeated mile
relay and apparently is the best
quarter-miler in the SWC, having
won four firsts in that event this
year.
After his third varsity letter,
“Jose”, as he was nicknamed two
years ago, is the only quarter-miler
to have been on the Aggie mile
relay for three years. He ran first
leg on the ’49 team which set a new
conference record of 3:14.9 and took
an individual third with a 48.2 in
440 in that meet.
Last year the A&M relay team
was not as strong, but Mitchell
anchored the quartet to many wins
and runner-up spots, finishing third
but once.
“Jose’s” best 440 time this year
is 48.6 which he turned in at Hous
ton in the Rice-Texas-A&M meet.
With no other SWC 440 man hav
ing broken 49.0 seconds this year,
Mitchell will be odds on favorite
tto take the SWC 440 crown by sea
son’s end, as well as a first in
this Saturday’s tri-meet on Kyle
Field between Rice, Texas and
A&M.

No. 1 Seeded DeBerry
Tennis Team Leader
By ED HOLDER
Battalion Sports Staff
“DeBerry’s anticipation and
alertness is as good as can be
found in any player,” said W. M.
Dowell, coach of the A&M Tennis
Team.
Last year, although playing
against veteran competition in the
Southwest Conference, R. G. De-
Berry held down the Number one
seat on the squad. He showed his
tennis talent perhaps when he de
feated Julian Oates of TU. Oates
was considered by many to be tops
in the SWC.
In Friday’s match with Ken
Crawford of SMU,. conference
champion of ’45 and ’50 and slated
to cop the title again this' year, De
Berry lost a well-played set, 6-3
and 6-1.
A junior from Odessa majoring
in journalism, DeBerry has carried
the load of the number one seat
for two years now, and has met
some of the top men in the state
during this time.

the number one tennis seat for

lost his singles match against
SMU (A&M’s first conference
match), it is practically ascer
tained that DeBerry will once
again be on the winning the
next time out.

“What’s on second?” Without
going into a long Abbot-Costello
routine, we can tell you that the
biggest five-foot-ten-inches of
baseball player you ever laid eyes
on is down at second—“Little Joe”
Ecrette.
Thei one-hundred fifty pound
wonder from San Antonio k coming
into his own this year as a leading
hitter, and further more, as a
long-ball knocker.
Last year “Little Joe” ended up
with the none too impressive bat
ting average of .235, but his .900
fielding percentage made up for
what he lacked at the plate.
It’s a different story this year
for the right-handed junior. In 10
pre-season (conference) games, Ec
rette has taken 33 official trips
to the plate. Eleven times he has
reached base by slapping the horse-
hide down someones throat to give
him a batting average of 303.
Keep It Up
Batting above the magical three-
hundred isn’t exactly old stuff for
Ecrette and you can bet your life
he plans to stay there. At the be
ginning of the season, Coach Beau
Bell had him batting in the No. 7
slot, but when conference time
rolled around Ecrette had moved
up to the No. 2 position.
“Little. Joe’s batting eye doesn’t
confine itself to the plate. In the
field, the speedy second-sacker has
committed but five errors in 14
games to keep that fielding aver
age well above .900.
Ecrette’s conference batting
average is a blustering .313 in
four games while a double and two
triples added considerably to RBI
and runs-scored columns. For the
season, the Aggies sparkplug has
rapped in eight runs and scamper
ed across with seven of his own.
10-Karat
As a double play man Ecrette
is worth his weight in gold. Dur
ing the game against TCU alone
earlier this week, the flashy key-
stoner figured in three DP’s. Twice
he played the part of a middle man,
once he was responsible for getting
it started.
With “Little Joe” Ecrette bat
ting second on the A&M baseball
team and scurrying around in the
direction of second base, the Ag
gies can rest assured that there
is one position that is mightily
filled.
Recreational Clubs
Meet Here Saturday
By BARNEY WELCH
Intramural Director
The Second Annual Southwest
Conference Recreational Club Meet
will be held Saturday, April 14th in
DeWare Field House at 3 p.m.
This meet will consist of gymnas
tics, weight lifting, soccer, wrest
ling and handball. Bowling and
table tennis will be held in the
MSC.
Invitations were sent to all SWC
schools, plus Dallas, Houston, San
Antonio and Fort Worth YMCA’s,
Dallas Athletic Club, Sam Houston
State Teachers College, North
Texas State Teachers College and
Louisiana State University.
Texas University will probably
be the only school to enter in all
events.
Last year A&M and Texas staged
a similar meet in which Texas won
the wrestling and gymnastic tests
while A&M took weight lifting and
tied in handball.
Members of these various teams
are boys who want to go a little
further in their particular sport.
They get competition in all sports
through the Intramural programs,
but some wish to compete with out
siders and are willing to do exti'a
Work in order to excell.
Means A Lot
To members of these clubs, a
meet such as will be held Saturday
will compare to a varsity meet with
other SWC schools.
They work out regularly as do
the varsity athletes, although they
get no renumeration in ways of
scholarships or other financial aids.
Many of these boys were out
standing athletes in their respec
tive high schools and some as
varsity material, but for various
reasons chose not to try for varsity
teams.
The club members pay their own
way to compete in other localities,
except that the Intramural De
partment helps to defray expenses.
But on the whole, the boys pay
their own ways.
The Gymnastics Club sells soda
water at Fite Nite in order to
raise money. Then they take the
money and journey to various
places to put on shows.
Three weeks ago the Gymnastics
Club went to Temple to give an
exhibition for the veterans at Mc-
Closky Hospital. Last year they
went to various high schools and
put on programs -which turned out
to be very good advertising for
A&M.
The Handball Club went to Hous
ton two weeks ago to compete with
Rice and won two out of three
matches.

Foil Team Qualifys
For State Finals
The Cadet foil team won the
College Bracket of an AFLA com
petition in Houston Saturday and
in doing so, qualified for the State
finals.
The deciding match pitted the
Aggies against Rice and the Cadets
came through with an impressive
5-2 win.
Aggie ace John Gottlob, got
A&M off to a good start by beat
ing Leopold French 5-1. Joe Mayes
followed on the victory road by out
pointing Jack Slattery of Rice. :
The Owls first cracked the win
column when Horace Flatt beat
Bob Jones. Mayes beat French but
Rice came back as Slattery slipped |
past Jones 5-3. That was the high
water mark for Rice as Gottlob
beat Flatt, and Jones signed 30 to
the fray by taking French.
Gottlob was the Cadet spark
plug during the meet,/which saw
five teams entered, as hie won eight
bouts and dropped only two. Mayes
won five and Jones three. Also en
tered in the meet was the Aggie
second squad which was, sparked by
Tom Munnerlyn and Willie Mat-
thijetz. The second team camp In
fourth.
This makes the third straight
year that tl\e Ag'gic foil team has
qualified for state finals, and in
the two years previous they won
the Collegiate bracket at the State
meet, beating Texas Teqh five to
two in 1949, and Tarleton five to
three last year.

Recently, the soccer team drove
to Dallas to play a game with one
of the local teams and won the
contest. They later played the same
team here as a return match and
again were victorious.
The Wrestling team won over
the Dallas YMCA club at Dallas a
few weeks ago and several Dallas
members were intercollegiate
champs.
Besides the clubs already men
tioned, the Rodeo Club and the
Water Polo Club are also helped by
money from the Intramural De

With the completion of the MSC,
Bowling and Table Tennis Clubs
have been added. These teams are
sponsored by the MSC but are
still composed of boys who wish to
compete with outsiders.
