As for athletes in World War II, the surgeon general’s spokesman said: “We made a study after the last war to see how men could be active in sports and still not be able to pass their physical examinations. What we found was surprising. “Some athletes had incipient tuberculosis. Others had advanced cases of syphilis. Others had all sorts of chronic diseases. They seemed to be able to give a good account of themselves in sports, but they wouldn’t be much good for the long haul. o ers Hailed By Somerville For 2nd Loss The A & M Consolidated Tigers suffered their second defeat in district play last night when they bowed to Somerville 19-25. Not really. But actually, that is no more untimely than are low everyday shelf prices on many, many staple food items right in the teeth of a virtually certain price freeze. Using old OPA markups, Crisco today on the 3 lb. can would cost us $1.18 per can, and our retail , price would be $1.29. Actually, our price is $1.07. Inconsistent, since ceilings are intended to keep prices down. But FEAR of Ceiling Prices has been the motivating force on most of the recent advances—everyone all along the line from producer to retailer wanted “to establish” a high ceiling price so that a freeze of prices would not catch him short. As for ourselves, we posted prices December 15th based on replacement costs, and these prices have been in effect a part of every day since, usually one minute imme diately before closing or right after opening. Thus we have kept our prices low in accordance with our advance buying advantages, while making it possible to increase our selling prices WHEN WE HAVE TO RE-BUY. Thus, our customers will enjoy price protection as long as it is possible for us to extend it. 37c Values—Large Duz, Oxydol . . . pkg. 33c 74c Value—No. 2 Wolf Chili can 65c 36c Value—No. 2’/- Libby y.c.
