Student Center Rises to Peak In Two Years Rising from a mass of brick, steel, and concrete two years ago to a beautiful building of modern architectural design today, the Me morial Student Center represents many long hours of planning and construction. Looking at the MSC from the front one can see the main lounge and promenade through the glass windows and doors, but cannot vis ualize all the many rooms that are within the building. The main entrance opens into the lounge with its colorful furniture. To the immediate right is the Front Office, behind the hotel clerk’s desk. These offices are used by the manager of the guest rooms and the social director. Pianos and Records Walking down the stairs, one passes on his right, in successive order, the piano room, record play ing room, senate chamber, council chamber, and last of all the man agement office, occupied by the director, assistant director, and accounting section. South of the management office is the head quarters for the Association of Former Students. On the right side of the hall go ing back to the main lounge are the social room, browsing library, game room, and telephone center. A check room is located on the west end of the main lounge. Ballroom with Terrace On the second floor are located a lounge at the head of the main stairs, 33 guest rooms, four stu dent activity rooms, check room, sun deck, ball room, and starlight terrace. The starlight terrace may be reached either from the second floor hall or by staii*s outside the building. On the third floor , are the pho tography lab, art room, four meet ing rooms, and 33 more guest rooms. With the planned supervision by the heads of the different commit tees and the social and educational director, A&M’s MSC, although just beginning its many activities, will give the Aggies a social, spir itual, and cultural background that will accompany them when they leave college, to make better citi zens of our nation. iiHI y-mm Business, Social Sides Split Staff The departments of the MSC are divided into two divisions. One is a business department, which handles services such as the 66 air-conditioned guest rooms, the 32 rooms in the Aggieland Inn, a deluxe dining room serving 160, coffee shop seating 85, and a foun tain room for 200. This department also handles banquet rooms, the gift shop, bowl ing lanes, barber shop, and tele phone center. C. F. Gent, assistant director and business manager heads this division. The other division is the social and educational department, head ed by Mrs. Ann Hilliard, former Student Center director at the an nex. The social and recreational program under her supervision in clude the browsing library, art pro gram, craft shop, dark rooms, rec ord room, dance areas, and hous ing for the bulk of the meetings for campus groups. 'n ■ * V' - ifl|p* f j I I'll Betty Bolander Straight from Michigan comes Miss Bolander, a young lady you see in the front offices of the Student Center. She is assistant to Mrs. Ann Hilliard, social and educational director. The two will work with students on the MSC committees and on a social calendar for the year. Center to Organize Recreation Groups Performing the job of keeping the Memorial Student Center and its grounds in an ultra-clean condition are A. O. Cravin, center, super intendent of housekeeping, and his two assistants, Everett Johnson, left, and E. W. Gilbert. Their job is a large one, but it is facilita ted by a supply of modern equipment which will allow them to keep the Center in tip-top shape. A&M students have been co operating by keeping off the newly-planted grass. Perhaps we won’t need signs seen on other campuses like “lion’t be a schmoe; let it growl” A&M’s new Memorial Student^ Center will be a laboratory of government and citizenship, if plans made by the entire staff come true. At. the Center, for example, a student may be exposed to art ex hibits, hobby studies, and many other forms of recreation—both mental and physical. He may be in spired by one of these activities, thus blending together cultural interests and daily living. Operation and maintenance costs of the center will come from mem bership fees, profits from its ser vices, and appropriations. The ap propriations, however, must come locally, since no state money is available for the operation and maintenance of the'Center. Offices Planned Most of the planning work of the directorate will be performed in its offices in the west wing of the Center, in the Council Cham ber. The committees and clubs which will be a part of the MSC program include the art gallery, games committee, house committee, grapy, music, and dance commit tees. The house committee will be a group of students to organize re ceptions, coffee hours, and wel coming parties. They will be given a budget by the council. One scope of their activities will be to give receptions in which the students and faculty of a department can get together and get acquainted on a social basis. This committee will go to the head of a department, for example and invite all the members and their wives to the reception. Then through an open letter, all of the majors of that department would be invited. Mrs. Ann Hilliard, social direct or, will put badges on the com mittee members and the house committee will introduce the stu dents and professors and help create a common bond. The browsing library committee will have a budget to buy books each month for the browsing library. The library will be . for pleasure, not for study. Art Lovers, Too The art gallery committee will be for those who wish to appreciate art. Mrs. Ralph Terry will be the advisor and will offer illustra tions several times a week.
