Waxahachie To
Grant Negroes
Equal Courses
Dallas, Nov. 18 (AP)—The
Waxahachie school system
has 30 days to provide equal
opportunity for Negro stu
dents to study courses now
offered white students there.
Federal Judge William H. Atwell
made the decision Wednesday. He
extended and clarified an order
he handed down after a prelim
inary hearing Oct. 1. The judge
told school officials to set up
even courses that Negro students
had not asked for.
The Negro parents who brought
suit against the two school dis
tricts had asked the judge' for a
permanent injunction against “sep
arate and unequal” schools.
They charged that both the
courses of study and the physical
plants at the school for Negroes
were unequal to those offered
white students in tjhe same dis
tricts, in violation of the Consti
tution’s 14th arqendment.
The Negroes ; did not argue in
either case for an order abolishing
segregation. Thf original petitions
had asked for ttn order declaring
unconstitutional; the board’s policy
of "providing fUcilities for Negro
students because of their race and
color." ; ! J
