j Program Paid For
\ I
The program is paid for out of
the money the foreign countries
would pay for the surplus items
they buy. By giving these scholar
ships it allows the countries to
keep the money they would send to
the United States within the boun
daries of their cquntry, Bowles
said. i '
The scholarship winnefs are
paid in the money oT the country
that they are studying in. This
prevents the United States from
having to handle all of the foreign
money.
“Almost a straight “A” tran
script is necessary to get to first
base”, Bowles said to answer a‘
question of what grades are ne
cessary.
The program is open to graduate
students and Seniors only. The sen
iors who apply should be graduat
ing in June, and would be abroad
as graduate students, Botvles add
ed. 1
The money that will be granted
to the students is fitted on a slid;
ing scale. It will amount to about
$1,220 in France to $3,000 in some
other countries. In England last
year is was $2,000, Bowles said.
Money is alloted according to
the cost of living in the country.
Graduate students, who are ap
plying for exchange lectures pos;
itions, can not apply for positions
beyond that of their comparable
positions in institutions in the
United States, Boyles said.
Age Limit
There is ho age limit for the
Fulbright scholarship winners, nor
is there any ban against married
people. The only drawback in the
marital status is that the federal
government floes not pay for the
winner’s husband or wife. It is
possible for the winner to make ar
rangements to have the money tak
en out of the monthly allotment
for his spouse’s ticket, Bowies
said.
Applications must; be in by Nov
ember 30 to the local screening
committee. The results of the pri
mary screening will be sent in no
later than December 15.
Applications of men past the doc
torate level must apply to the na
tional headquarters in Washing
ton, D. C., Bowles said.
Additional information on any
phase of the program may be se
cured by writing the Institute of
International Education, Washing
ton, D. C., Bowles concluded.

ment each day before she left.
This was easy, for all we had
'left was a rug and a telephone
book upon which we took our scan
ty meals.
I soon bribed the policeman with
some old comic-books, and he allow
ed me a cigarette a day. Pd tear
open the weed, scatter the to
bacco on the rug, roll the paper
up, putting in my ear. I laughed
hysterically while my wife futilely
searched the room. When she’d
shouldered her sledge hammer and
gone to the job, I’d gleefully
Hoover the rug, re-roll| the cigar
ette, and blissfully inhale the
smoke ‘ into my one uncollapsed

Then one day I went all smash.
I sneaked down the fire escape,
and went across town to enter a
Pipe-smoking contest. Naturally
(I won—was ahead 15 puffs and
a long drag at the finish—but
the excess was too mucR. for me.
I awoke in the Nic Ward of the
hospital, sweating, having convul
sions, and screaming wildly, “Sold
American.” Pink cigarettes were
floating around by head.
And then there was a quite fig
ure standing there who said he
could help me. Ijie was a member
qf Nicotine Anonymous.
“Call me if you need me,” he
said simply, and left his card.
The night after they brought
me/home from the hospital I was
sitting in my room. I was fighting
the terrble urge. An open pack
of cigarettes lay on the mantel.
I couldn't! I wouldn’t! But my
hand reached (for the pack. I stop
ped, grabbed the phone, dialed a
number shakily.
“Harry! Come over! This is Joe!”
r “Right.”
He came. He comforted me. He
told me how he had gone through
identically the same torture. Pick
ing up a cigarette^ he 6 u t« it to his
lips, and then took it down with
out lighting.

Se we talked on into the night.
He’d brought a fifth of scotch
am4 I soon forgot about smoking.
We went downtown and got am-
otneb fifth. Cigarettes didn’t even
enter my head.
And then early morning, my wife
came in.
“Look, Darling, I’m cured!” I
shobted joyfully, pouring her a
drink.
“Oh, Joe, I; knew you could do
it . . . gimme a shot.”;
So you see, dear friends, you
too can be cured of Dfemon Nico
