On May 8. 048, Mcl^ndon, Orr
and a bout dr vm-, Steve Chouest,
left Grand Isl B io collect oyster
specimens at the Barre Field.! In
Timbalier Bay the boat’s motor
sputtered and died.! In an attempt
to anchor thef |oat, the anchor
rope was los; overboard. While
Chouest and Otr iwere in the cabin
trying to start! the engine, McLen
don slipped o: f ’his dothing and
jumped overboard in an effort to
recover the ro;>e.j
The current was strong, so that
the boat and McLendon drifted
rapidly apart. After a while Mc
Lendon called flora life-jacket. Orr
went overboarc with the jacket and
swam to McLe idtm who complain
ed of leg cramps. The two were
unable to return:, to the boat, |be
cause wind carried it in one di
rection, while iidb carried the two
swimmers away at an angle.
Chouest, the boat driver, tried to
halt the boat with a temporary
'anchor made by ihe boat’s battery
and a rope, but it failed to bold.
Just before the! swimmers reach
ed a small island; of the Fornation
group, McLendon slipped off I the
life-preserver, j Although Orr got
him back on tine preserver'and
subsequently opM the -island, Mc
Lendon w’as unconscious, and fail
ed to rally despite two hours arti
