Forestry Jeep
Needed to Fight
Fires in Denmark
The fire-fighting jeep, develop
ed bjrthe A&M Texas Forest Ser
vice, has attracted international
attention, as evidenced by a query
from Copenhagen, Denmark, ask
ing for details of operation and
special equipment used.
According to Niels Yde, chief
engineer for tVillys Overland Sam-
ilefabrik in Denmark, that country
has been plagued with huge forest
fires ajnd needs a more efficient
fire fighting unit.
Yde’s interest in the possibilities
of the jeep, was first arousd by
contacting 1 the Louisiana Forestry
Commission. The Texas version of
the jeep is more adaptable to Den
mark’s terrain, however, making
it more suitable, Yde Mated.
Special equipment includes a
specially designed; middle buster
type plow which folds up into the
bed. a steel top, front grill, belly
plates, winch and I hydraulic lift,
oversized tires and j if two-way ra
dio.
Each unit has a!two-man crew.
One drives and plows a fire lane
about three feet wide, the other
follows and pets backfires.
