white hair and round, soft bodies,
were sitting around a hqtel room
discussing one of the toughest
grinds in sports. . . that is six-day
bicycle racing, which wil), return
to New York February 29 for the
first time since the war, . .
The riders had had^a couple of
faces in Cleveland and Chicago and
tfitre’ll be a lot of familiar names
in the field, but the talk of this
jgfoup concerned the great riders
of bygone days, races in the “old”
garden, redolent of gariijc! and red
iWine and fans who went], without
sleep longer than the riders, and
races in Paris, and Newark, and
Chicago and Berlin and Montreal.
The group included the promot
ers of the 1948 race, Felix Lafen-
etre and Mike Santarpia; Joe Fog-
ler, a ijfreat rider: of the 1905-15
era; Francis Albertanti, the tub-
