Winners in Crops
Contest Announced
P. W. Leeper of Los Fresnos was
high-point man of the annual
freshman crops contest held by
the Agronomy Society last week,
Dr. J. E. Adams, head of the de
partment, announced.
Leeper was awarded a gold med
al for first place, and his name
will be engraved on the Howell
Trophy, which hangs in the agron
omy library.
Other winners and their placings
include: R. P. Smart of Utopia,
silver medal for second place; J.
E. Chappell, Memphis, Texas,
bronze medal for third place; H. J.
Mack, Gatesville, bronze medal for
fourth place; and F. M. Zabcik,
Temple, bronze medal for fifth
places.
The crops contest was the first
held since 1941. It consisted of
the identification of crop plant
seeds, plants, common weeds, and
judging of samples of legume seeds,
wheat, and grain sorghums.

Vaughn is also a distinguished stu
dent, having a grade point average
of 2.79 for three years work. He
entered A.&M. in the summer of
1945 and started working his way
through school as a waiter in the
mess hall.
He also has tutored and graded
papers for the History Department.
