THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1947 THE BATTALION Page 3 * ■ON KYLE FIELD by PAUL MARTIN Arkansas Had Tight Squeeze Martin In the game between the visit ing Aggies and the Porkers last Friday and Saturday nights, high- scoring Arkansas forward A1 Wil liams made nine of his 29 points by charity toss- es to establish |a new record for himself i n that depart- ment. This sur passes by four points the rec ord for himself set by Bill Hen ry of Rice i n 1945. The Ag- | gies, who enter- ’ed the tilt as underdogs, out- hustled and out- raced their taller opponents in all but a five minute stretch right af ter intermission when the Porkers tallied 13 points to their one. The work of the pivot-playing forward was all that saved the hosts from suffering their first defeat of the season on home floors. At times the Razorbacks were not even able to get the ball past the free throw line of their own goal. This threw quite a scare into the Arkansas aggregation for Karow was using race-horse tac tics and long passes which caught the home team napping and which can be expected to be used by Texas this week-end. In order for the Razorbacks to rank first, they must beat the Steers both games and then win the run-off. They will be play ing at a disadvantage for Wil liams, Kok, and McGaha are all on the injured list. Williams is suffering from a sprained an kle hurt in the Aggie tilt last Saturday night, Kok hurt his nose which is now badly swollen and McGaha, who was hurt ear lier in the season, seems to be definitely out. | Bee Team Plays Friday Night Coach Johnny Frankie’s Aggie Bee cagers will wind up their sea son play along with the A squad this aturday night. Friday, they fill the first half of a double bill ing, taking on the District Champ ion an Jacinto High School team of Houston starting at 6 p. m. at DeWare Field House. Saturday night they proceed the varsity and Ponies on the floor when they take on the University of Houston Bees. In the first en counter between the two schools, the Aggie Bees got. slightly the worst end of the deal. Morgan Gets CounciPs Okay As Tech Football Mentor Texas Tech’s controversy over whether or not Head Coach Dell Morgan would remain as chief foolball mentor ended with the college athletic council giving Mor gan a vote of approval. The move to oust Morgan was begun when several members of the football team reportedly ex pressed dissatisfaction with the coaching situation. Following, a petition was circulated and the names of some 670 students were affixed. Over 137,000 veterans or depen dents of veterans now are wards of Veterans Administration. Homer Adams In tilts with Arkansas last week-end, Adams played one of his best games this season. Now in his last year at A&M, Adams is one of the few veteran round- ballers on the court and both his offensive and defensive work were highly commendable. He also made a good showing against the Steers in Austin but in this case he out-hustled the hustlers. Bob Kamperman played his best game of the season also and ac cording to even the Razorback sup porters, the Aggie five as a whole proved that they were far from out-classed by the second place Porkers. Even on Saturday night, when the score did not substan tiate the claims, the Cadets kept the hosts on their toes with pass interceptions, long passes, and tip- ins. Long set shots were also con necting pretty well. Each year in Texas, about 250 persons lose their lives in fires on farms or in rural communities. One-third of these are children under 10 years of age. NEW SMOKING PLEASURE with a CUST0M-BILT PIPE... and Exclusive, rich, mellow CUSTOM-MIX TOBACCO ... Downs Nat- atorium. The dual meet will start at 3 p.m. After defeating the Texans in Austin on February 18, the Cadet tankers established several pool records. So far this year Art Ad amson’s charges have been com pletely successful, winning every match by a substantial margin and establishing new pool records al most at will. Danny Green and Jimmy Flow ers have thus far sparked the team along with Allen Self, Gene Sum mers, Howard Spencer, and Jack Riley. The Medley Relay trio, Spencer, Flowers and Green set a new pool record in the last meet to add to the string of broken records already set this year by the A&M swimming aggregation. Aggie forward Don Voiding tips one into the bucket as Longhorn guard AI Madsen attempts to cover the basket. In the background Mike Garcia gets set for the rebound, if any. This shot came at a cru cial moment in the game here between the Aggies and Longhorns on February 15. Here it is: “About one boy in fifty will re main after the feast and of his own accord offer to help clear the things up or to wash the dishes.— Do you know this Fiftieth Boy?— There are forty-nine boys who are seeking jobs? the job seeks the Fiftieth Boy.—The Fiftieth Boy makes glad the heart of his par ents.—The Fiftieth Boy smoothes the wrinkles out of his teacher’s forehead, and takes the worry out of her mind.—All the grouches and sour-faces brighten when they see the Fiftieth Boy coming, for he is brave and cheery.—The forty-nine “didn’t think”; the Fiftieth Boy thinks.—The Fiftieth Boy makes a confidant of his mother and a pal of his father.—He does not lie, steal nor tattle, because he does not like to. When he sees a ban ana peel on the sidewalk, where it is liable to cause some one to slip and fall, or a piece of glass in the road where it may puncture a tire, he picks it up. He does not cry when he is hurt.—He 'is respectful to all women and girls.—He is not afraid to do right nor ashamed to be decent.—He looks you straight in the eye.—He tells the truth, whether the consequences to him are unpleasant or not.—He is not a prig nor a sissy, but he stands up straight and is honest.—For ty-seven out of the forty-nine like him.—He is pleasant toward his own sister as toward the sisters of other fellows.—He is not sorry for himself.—He works as hard as he plays.—Everybody is glad to see him.—Do you have that kind of a boy at your house?—If not, don’t complain, there are not enough of them to go around.” both, nights with the Bee team opening at 6 p. m. against San Jacinto High School of Houston on Friday night and the University of Houston Bee team on Saturday night. The main events begin at 8 p. m. This will be the second game between A&M Varsity and both TCU and SMU, with the first games staged on January 10 and 11. TCU bowed before the furious attack launched by the Cadets but the Ponies handed the Farmers their worst conference defeat of the season. TCU enters this contest the underdog with but one win in nine trys to their credit. This places the Frogs on the bottom of the list in conference standings. SMU is more unpredictable for after trouncing the top-rating Arkansas Porkers two in a row, the Ponies received a drubbing at the hands of the Baylor Bears last week. The Mustangs are still holding third place with seven wins and three losses to their credit. Coupon book holders with even numbers will be admitted Friday night and odd number ed coupon books will be admit ted Saturday night.
