Kyle Field
By Junior Canis
EARL BEESLEY did a mas
terful job of hurling in Saturday’s
baseball game against the T. u.
Teasippers. With an obviously over
anxious infield giving him a very
ragged brand of support, he came
through with a one-man perform
ance time after time in the clinch-
GS.
" BEESLEY’S steal of third base
in the sixth inning, which set up
the lone Aggie tally, was as neat
ly executed a bit of petty larceny
as we have seen on Kyle Field all
season. The Kid plays a heads-up
brand of baseball in all depart
ments, and is as dangerous in the
batter's box and on the base paths
as he is on the pitching mound.
AGGIE HITTING POWER was
at a low ebb Saturday against
the deceptive hurling of Teasipper
Bobby Layne. Layne employs an
abbreviated windup and a short-
arm snap delivery that gives no
indication of the speed of his ball.
With the entire Cadet lineup wal
lowing in a magnificent batting
slump, Layne looked good.
WE HELD OUR BREATH on
Hub Moon's long fly which was
picked off the right field fence
in the sixth. Just a couple of feet
higher, and the ballgame could
very easily have had an entirely
different outcome. We expect that
Layne was holding his breath too.
THE BATT again finds itself
minus a sports editor, as Marion
“Dookie" Pugh, who has done a
fine job of covering the Kyle Field
beat, has left us for Cowtown. It
is reported that the former Aggie
gridiron great will play semi-pro
baseball in Fort Worth.

T. u. Virtually Clinches SWC Flag
By 2-1 Victory Over Texas Aggies
By U. Y. Johnston
Texas u. virtually clinched the Southwest Conference
baseball title Saturday as Bobby Layne pitched a no-hit
ball game against the Texas Aggies, to win 2-1. This is the
second one for Layne this year, but the first was in a pre
season game.
Neither pitcher was in serious
trouble until the fifth inning when
Layne started the inning with a
clean single. Beesley then struck
out Ortega. Cox, the next man up,
grounded out, sending Layne to
second. Mitchell then got on base
on an error, advancing Layne to
third. Then Ferguson grounded
out short to first, stopping a
would-be-rally.
In the top of the six Zomlefer
ted off by getting a walk, stole
second and scored on Williams' sin
gle. On the throw to home plate
Williams went to second and scored
on Jackson’s single to center field.
Jackson was out trying to steal
second, Beesley struck out Layne
and caused Ortega to ground out

to stop the rally—but the damage
had already been done.
“Kid” Beesley score the lone Ag
gie run in the last of the sixth.
Beesley got on when Jackson threw
wild to first. He went on to sec
ond on the play, stole third, and
scored when Layne threw wild to
home plate on Willingham's sacri
fice bunt.
Beesley gave up nine hits, keep
ing them well scattered except for
the sixth inning when T. u. com
bined two hits and two walks to
score their two runs.
The game was a pitcher's .duel
from start to finish with Layne
striking out fourteen men and
Beesley whiffing eight.
