The bright hopes of Texas Aggies for a 1946 South
west Conference baseball crown faded off into the aura of
a bare mathematical possibility over the weekend as the
Baylor Bears bumped the Aggies in the second of a two-
game series to split the twin bill.
Earl Beesley came through with
a fine ninth-inning performance in
Friday’s game, fanning three
Bruins with the tying runs on
base to win 7-5. Beesley struck
out 13 men and allowed nine hits,
fanning four in the third frame
when two Bears reached first on
dropped third strikes by Catcher
Peck Vass. In addition, he rapped
out a double which drove in the
two winning runs. Pressly led the
Aggie attack with three hits out
of four trips, while Thornton got
two out of three and Vass got a
single and a triple out of four
trips to the platter. Secondbaseman
Redding was the star of the Baylor
offense, getting four safe blows
out of five appearances at the
platter.
The Bears lost no time in the
second game in getting to South
paw Johnny Shuford for three
runs in the first inning of Satur
day’s game. A1 Newman took over
in the second and pitched a cred
itable brand of ball, allowing four

hits and four runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Bardwell retired the last two men
in the ninth without allowing a
safety. Pressly’s two-bagger was
the only extra base hit the Aggies
could get off the offerings of
Spearin, Baylor pitcher, whent the
route and held the Cadets to a total
of six hits. Final score was 8-5
for Baylor.
The Aggies travel to Houston to
morrow to meet the Rice Owls, and
will square off against the league
leading Texas university Long
horns here on Saturday.
