Genial, mild-mannered Earl
Beesley was hot as a Colt equalizer
as he limited the TCU Homed
Frogs to one hit in the opening
game of the Southwest conference
baseball season here at College
Station yesterday. Earl missed
that coveted hall of fame by a
hair. In the ninth inning, with one
man away, big Gus Bierman lash
ed a clean single to left center
for the only hit of the day for the
Froggies.
Beesley was going strong as
“Femme Fatale” or “Embrace Me”
up until the seventh frame when he
weakened a bit, but he came
through in great shape. Earl
fanned 16 and walked five while
performing his masterpiece.

really been pounding that horse-
hide. “Hub” isn’t a long distance
hitter, but he pokes that ball with
the greatest of ease, and at the
present he has a sweet .529 for the
first seven games, and yesterday
he got one for three.
Moon is still bothered some by
his old leg injury received here
in 1941, but he can go for our
money.
Coach Manning Smith’s tennis
team trimmed the Sam Houston
Bearcats here Wednesday after
noon. The Aggie netters took
every set, winning seven and los
ing zero. Not bad for a starter.

Willie Zapalac tossed the discuss

Longhorns last Tuesday. It was
good for a third. Leonard Dickey
tossed the platter 134 feet for first
place. That distance will win the
conference.

Team Saturday
The Texas Aggie baseball B

The high school team from Hous

Downs Pool is Model
For Orange High
Downs Natatorium will be the
model for a swimming pool to be
built by Orange High School if
present plans of the school board
are carried out.
Brooks Conover, famous south
paw passer of the Aggie football
teams of 1929-30, now head coach
and athletic director at Orange
High, visited the campus Tuesday
to inspect the A. & M. natatorium.
The Orange school board has al
ready authorized building the pool
yesterday, making several nice
stops. Arnold also does a swell
job of handling the pitchers.
Johnny Zeigler has either tied for
or has been high point man in
every track meet that the Aggies
have participated in this year. He
should duplicate in the Southwest
Conference meet.

Aggies’ Ace Hurler
Holds TCU Sluggers
To One Single
Earl Beesley came within inches
of a perfect game yesterday at
Kyle Field as he blanked the TCU
Horned Frogs 2-0 in the Aggies’
conference opener. Beesley fanned
16 Frog battere, getting Herbert
Joyner, Harry Mullins, Tom Orr
and Ken Benjamin three times
each.
The Aggies got to Press Thomp
son for one run by Cotton Lindloff
in the first off a walk, one hit, an
infield out and a single by Peck
Vass. They scored again in the
fourth when they got Stubby Mat
thews on with a fielder’s choice
after Benny McClure had erred on
Bill Bradley’s infield bouncer, Mat
thews stole second and scored on
Beesley’s single.
Peck Vass led the hitters, get
ting two singles in three trips and
Hub Moon got a double for the
only extra base knock.
Gus Bierman ruined Beesley’s bid
for a hitless game when he dump
ed a Texas leaguer into center
field after Mullins had fanned in
the ninth. Brownie Chiles batted
for Orr and got a walk, one of the
five given by Beesley. Curley Bar
nett, batted for Jim Jones and
went out on strikes, as did Ben
jamin, to end the game.
Afield Benjamin was the star,
to be patterned as closely as pos
sible after Downs Natatorium,
which is one of the few standard
sized 60’ x 100’ pools in the South
west.
