To Battalion Readers . . .
I
Criticism of the Battalion's policies in regard to news,
editorials, and advertising space has been widespread.
Much of it is justified. There are demands that we cover
the news more fully, cut down the space devoted to adver
tising, increase the size of our sheet, and bear down on
our proofreading.
We are not evading the issue. There is plenty of room
for improvement. And we intend to improve the Battalion’s
appearance and content so as to conform as well as possible
to the needs of a large student body and a growing com
munity.
Tabloid size has prevented us from achieving desired
news coverage. We have hopes of adding an insert sheet
soon, but so far, post-war restrictions on paper have pre
vented this. Our editorial and reportorial staff is now or
ganizing for the hurry-up pace.
In future issues of the Battalion, general interest ar
ticles about campus and community will be found on the
front page. Editorials, Backwash columns and features ar
ticles will be found on the second page. Sports will dominate
the third page, and the back page will be devoted to notices,
club news, and classified advertising.
We feel our responsibility to the student body and the
community very keenly. We will try our best to fulfill our
obligations to our readers.

Backwash: “An agitation resulting from some action or occurence.”—Webster.
By Warren Rice
As eight o’clock classes pulled
Aggies out of bed Monday morn
ing, few had spent the weekend
on the campus. The lure of faraway
places was apparently strong. Most
of them came back looking like
Ray Milland in “The Lost Week
end”. One senior, returning in the
wee hours from Tessieland must
have been smoking too much, be
cause as he was put to bed, he
smiled, “Ahh! So round, so firm,
so fully packed!”

In some years College Station
has a season called winter. Then
the fountain in Prexy’s Triangle
is frozen and even the bulls wear
ear muffs. But on other years, such
as this'one, it just rains. Either
drops as big as billiard balls at,
ten, two, and four, or a saturating
mist during all twenty-four hours.
These are the years that try men’s
souls.
The wet years have only one
compensation. The spring follow
ing the monsoon months is such
a relief! The Batt usually runs a
little pome on the first sunny day
of each spring:
Spring is sprung
The grass is riz,
I wonder where
The flowers is.
The next day it hails.

Currently, the foremost bleed
heard on the campus is about the
cafeteria in Sbisa Hall. And aboufc
the plans for installing a similar
chow line in Duncan Hall for non
military students. Non-regs say
it costs them about a buck and a
half each day for very little food
and takes more time then regular
mess hall style meals. They would
like to see the cafeteria continued
for the benefit of married couples
only, and a return to mess tables,
more food and lower charges for
single exservicemen.
