Aggies Take Steers 50-44 In Rough Game
Hustling Cadets Lead All the Way As
Tight Defense Keeps Steers Bottled
By Marion Pugh
Intramurals Have
Class A&BLeagues
The fighting Texas Aggies were hot as a firecracker
Wednesday night as they banged the Texas University
Longhorns all over DeWare Field House to the tune of 50
to 44.
Once or twice we thought we'
might get out the pads and move
out on Kyle Field. It was that kind
of a ball game, a rough and tum
ble affair that had the overflow
crowd (approximately 300 fans
turned away) on the edge of their
seats during the entire contest.
Even Mrs. Marty Karow, who was
keeping tap on personal fouls for
Coach Marty, lost count three dif
ferent times. It was that hair
raising.
It was the Aggie game all the
way after the first three minutes,
when Jamie Dawson dropped in a
two-pointer to put the Aggies
ahead 7 to 4. From then on the
Longhorns were fighting an up
hill battle.
The Aggies employed a shifting
3<>jne defense that kept the T. u.
boys shooting from far out. The
fact is, T. u. seemed to be some
what confused. Led by Jamie Daw-
son, Bill Yeoman, and Oscar White
the Ags piled up a 23-16 lead at
the half.
The Aggies came back with blood
in their eyes in the first few min
utes of the second half and hung
up a substantial 40-27 lead that
looked like a winner. But with Vi-
brey White, Don Wooten, and A1
Madsen hitting them from all
pirts of the court, they whittled
the Aggies lead down to 37-40. At
‘this time Aggie fingernails, nerves,
etc. took a terrific beating. How
ever, the Aggies were not to be
denied. They steadily pulled away
to a safe lead with a 50-44 win.
The victory was indeed sweet and
well deserved.
While the Longhorns were put
ting in their bid for victory, little
Roy Cox stole the ball and was out
in the open by himself for an
easy crip shot, but missed. This,
we feel, put the game on ice for
the Aggies. Outside of making this
slight miscue, Cox was a thorn in
the Aggies side. His dribbling, ball
handling and all around great play
was one of the outstanding features
of the game.
Also outstanding for the Long
horns were Madsen and Wooten.
Wooten led the scoring for Texas
with 15 points, while Madsen was
outstanding on the floor.
For the Aggies Big Jamie Daw
son racked up 21 points and was
very effective under the hoop. He
played an outstanding all around
game. Our hats are off to Oscar
White, who left the hospital late
Wednesday afternoon, and the same
night played outstanding ball all
the way. White rang the bell for
13 points. Then there was that
little cotton-headed soph, Bill Yeo
man, who turned the Longhorns
Intramural Athletics at A. & M.
this semester will more than double
in size with the return to separate
leagues for Upperclassmen and
Freshmen and with the entry of
the many all-veteran teams.
About fifty teams will compete
and a total of eleven different
sports will be scheduled, according
to “Spike” White, of the Physical
Education Department.
Upper class competition will
start as soon as the veteran dor
mitories g*et organized and will
embrace the regular military
every way but loose. When he
wasn’t stealing the ball he was
attempting to do so. Bill has quite
a bit of finesse on the hardwoods,
but what he lacks in finesse he
makes up in hustle. With the three
above mentioned boys were “Peck”
Voss and Homer Adams who were
all over the court hustling every
second. These two Aggies contri
buted more than enough for the
home team’s victory. Mr. Yeoman
pulled the Ags out of holes con
tinuously by getting that ball over
the center stripe in the nick of
time.
All in all it was a terrific ball
game and every thin clad Aggie
that put a foot on the floor Wed
nesday night did himself proud.
Saturday the team journeys to
Houston to meet the Rice Insti
tute Owls. Game time will be 8:00.
