The Battalion. (College Station, Tex.) 1893-current, September 08, 1944, Image 3
FRIDAY AFTERNOON, SEPTEMBER 8, 1944 THE BATTALION PAGE 3 At Guion Hall today and Satur day is the usual double feature. The first of these is “Five Graves to Cairo”, with Eris Von Stron- heim, Anne Baxter, and Franchot Tone. This picture can be consid ered among* the “A” group. A good cast and a good plot help it. It concerns Rommel’s (played by Von Stroneheim) advance and re treat across North Africa. Tone plays the part of a British soldier who is left behind by his unit in the first part of the campaign. He learns the Nazi plans, and finds out where their supplies come from. It is here that the five graves worm their way into the plot, and very cleverly, too. Tone is convincing as a spy, and Miss Baxter lends her beauty to the story. “So This is Washington”, with Lum and Abner, of radio fame, is the second part of the bill. Seems that one of the boys discovers, by mistake, a new syn thetic rubber and they go to the capitol to offer it to the gov ernment. Abner, the discoverer, goes on a jitterbugging spree and forgets the formula. From then on it is anybody’s show. The Lowdown: Action in the first, and laughter in the last. The kind of show that is always appreciated. At the Saturday prevue and Sunday, Guion presents “Lucky Partners”, with Ginger Rogers, Ronald Colman, and Jack Carson. This is an old one, 'out with Gin ger in the cast, it has to be good. Colman takes Ginger on a trip of the country just before she is to marry Carson, so that he can study her mental reactions. You see he in some kind of a doctor. On the trip, Ginger and Colman naturally fall for each other, and Carson’s reactions to this situa tion is amusing. The Lowdown: Although the dresses are too long, the hats fun ny looking, and the “hair-dos” out of fashion long ago, Ginger was pretty even then. Monday and Tuesday Guion real ly whips out and presents a show released this year. “A Guy Named Joe”, with Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunn, and Lionel Barrymore, is the show and it is a very good one. With a cast like that, what show wouldn’t be good. The plot is a good one, and the film is superb. Tracy is excellent as a Devil-may-care bomber pilot, who is killed on a mission, but returns in spirit to his former haunts. The dream sequence which covers half of the show is done with sparkling wit. Miss Dunn is very good as Tracy’s sweetheart. Van Johnson, the up and coming young actor, also turns in a good performance. The Lowdown: Let’s give this one four twinkling stars. Put it on your must list. The Campus brings us two fairly old and fairly good shows for its double bill Saturday. “Despera does”, with Randolph Scott and Claire Trevor, is a better than average horse opera. Some of the scenes are beautiful, and the whole show is filmed in technicolor. “Canal Zone” is the second pic, with Chester Morris and Harriett Hilliard. For airplane enthusiasts this is just the thing and they will undoubtedly enjoy it. For the rest, it is ordinary fare. Too much foot age is given to stunt shots and very little attention is given to the romantic angle. The air shots are good, but the plot is weak. The Lowdown: Fair entertain ment, but the shows are too dusty with the sand of time. Better study for those “C” squizzes. For the Saturday night prevue, Sunday and Monday, the Campus lets us have a good one for a change. “Round the World”, with Kay Kyser and his band, Georgia Carlol, Mischa Auer, Joan Davis, and Marcy McGuire. Although the plot isn’t too good, the music, and the beautiful women, (Georgia), make up for it easily. It concerns the Kyser band as it tours the world entertaining the soldiers overseas. The band is solid and in the groove; Georgia Carrol is exquisite, Mischa Auer will tickle you, and Marcy Mc Guire swings out on a reet num ber. The Lowdown: The best musical seen around here in a long time, and fellows, Georgia is gorgeous. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Campus is “In Old Chicago”, with Tyrone Power, Anne Baxter, and Don Ameche. Another of the oldies, but nevertheless, good. Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicks over a kero sene lamp and the result is a huge conflagration. You will remember it as the Chicago fire. The fire is the main incident in the plot, and the scenes of Chicago burning are some of the best ever filmed. Of course the eternal triangle is func tioning in the plot, with Miss Bax ter as the most interesting apex. LOUPOT’S Trade With Lou — He’s Right With You! WILL PAY HIGHEST PRICES I. E. S. Lamps — Slide Rules Books — Drawing Sets — T-Squares Drawing Boards COLLEGE BOOK STORE At North Gate Life in those days was rough and ready and so is the picture. The Lowdown: Nothing to cut a class about, but if you have some hours to kill, this is as good a way to murder them as can be found. —Attend San Antonio Aggie Dance— —BACKWASH— (Continued from Page 2) does have beautiful women and what’s more, lots of them have con vertibles. Army, you can’t go wrong, with the Longhorn women. And they don’t have long horns. Signs of the Times Eager Beaver season will be open in a couple of weeks and they will fall like sitting ducks when the big guns of the Aggies start boom ing out on Kyle Field Saturday 23. Congratulations to Dorm 11 and their spirited sign. Once again the campus is beginning to show tan gible evidence of the Spirit of Ag- gieland. The signs are good. We like them. But keep the signs show ing the football spirit and not any other. Meaningful Meanings Some people don’t know what they want and won’t rest until they get it. . . Wall street men should make good farmers. They know ho wto water the stock and shear the sheep. . . . Aggies should make good fishermen. They know how to shoot the line and catch- the fish. . . One’s estimation of a living wage depends on whether he is getting or giving it. . . . One thing that is accepted at it’s face value is the smile. ... A girl is some times accepted at her face value but it is better if she has some figures to prove it. . . . The saxa- phone player makes less, playing for harmony, than he would for hush money. . . . Some people walk to reduce. Others are reduced to walking. . . TSCW girls walk to stimulate an appetite. . . TSCW lassies walk with an Aggie to re duce . . .the Aggies pocketbook . . . To determine the real value of money, just try to borrow some. . . . An umbrella 'is the only thing some people put away for a rainy day. . . . Itn’t it a pity that when people lose their temper they have to find it again. —Attend San Antonio Aggie Dance— —CONSOLID A TED— (Continued iiom page 1) weeks and then will be dismissed at 2:45 P. M.
