Intramural Swim Meet Starts Thursday
Preliminaries To Be Held Thursday;
Finals Scheduled for Sat. Afternoon
In a statement issued to all
athletic officers last week, W. E.
Penberthy, head of the Physical
Education Department, announced
that the Intramural Swimming
meet would be held this week with
preliminaries set to be run off
Thursday afternoon and the finals
scheduled for Saturday.
All men planning to enter the
meet must report at the Gym on
Thursday at 4:30 for organization.
All intramural games previously
set for Thursday will be postponed
to a later date, said Penberthy.
The meet this year will be very
similar to the one held last semes
ter. In order for a company to re
ceive the fifty entry points they
must enter men in at least three
events. The company winning the
meet will be given thirty additional
points, with 20, 15, 10, and 5 points
being given for second, third, fourth
and fifth place winners respective
ly.
Events scheduled for the meet
are the 400 ft. relay, 100 ft. back
stroke, 100 ft. sid£ stroke, diving,
200 ft. free style, and the 400 ft.
military relay. A new event, the
100 ft. side stroke swimmers must
keep their top arm above water
with a dry towel to be carried in
this hand. The towel must be per
fectly dry at the end of the race.
Each man will carry approximately
10 lbs. of weight wrapped in a
towel when swimming in the 400
ft. military relay. In the diving
contest, each man will be required
to execute three prescribed dives
and two optional ones of his own
choice. Each contestant will be al
lowed to enter only two events,
said Penberthy.
According to Penberthy, last
semester’s meet was a very suc
cessful one. and he hopes that the
respective companies will show as

“Sparky” Eberle
Letterraan Tackle,
Returns to Fold
Aggieland’s gridders entered
their second week of training Mon
day, ending the drill with a 30
minute scrimmage. Although the
boys were a little off form due
to the weekend rest, they had
plenty of hustle.
Another letterman who was not
counted on to play this year re
turned to the fold. He is “Sparky”
Eberle, who played a lot of tackle
last year. “Sparky” was not in
uniform Monday, but he was due
to take part in Tuesday’s workouts.
Harold V. Ratliff, Associated
Press Sports Editor, was on hand
for Monday’s drill. He was on his
annual pre-season trip to the
campus at which time he gets in
dividual pictures of the boys and
attempts to figure how the Aggies
will fare in the conference race.
Monday’s workout started off
with a punting drill which was fol
lowed by passing. After running
dummy scrimmage for awhile, the
boys really started roughing it up
with a full steam scrimmage.
BOOTS AND SPURS WANTED
Many students on the campus know of A. & M.
graduates in your home towns who would sell their
senior boots and spurs. Help me get in touch with
these men so that I might be able to obtain more
of these hard-to-get items. You will do a service
to the present senior class in this way.

2-Way Radios Soon
America’s first two-way taxicab
radio system will be installed in
Cleveland by the Yellow and Zone
Cab companies as soon as possible
after the war, provided approval
can be obtained from the Federal
Communications Commission for
this service. The proposed installa
tion is being worked out with the
help of the General Electric Com
pany’s Electronics Department and
Cab Research Bureau, Inc., the
latter representing the taxi in
dustry.
The radio communication system
will be of benefit to the general
public, because it will make it
possible to':
Establish contact with any cab
instantly at any place in the city;
Eliminate all present unattend
ed call boxes, with their direct
line connection to cab headquar
ters;
Reduce “dead” mileage and thus
conserve gasoline, rubber, and ex
tend the life of the taxicab itself.
Present plans call for one main
transmitter for the downtown
area and two others to cover the
rest of Greater Cleveland. Each
transmitter would have four chan
nels, with 100 cabs assigned to
each channel.
4- With the intramural competition
having been completed in softball
and tennis except for the finals in
tennis between C Battery and E
Troop, basketball and volleyball
competition has eliminated a fpw
more likely contenders for the cov
eted intramural flag.
In League A in basketball this
afternoon’s game between D Com
pany and F Company will throw
the league into a tie with the win
ner of the game and C Battery.
All three teams have lost one
game. F and D Companies now
each have four victories to their
credit as compared to C Battery’s
five. There will have to be a play
off between this afternoon’s vic
tors and C Battery to determine
the league championship. B Bat
tery has already won the League
B crown and will play in the fi
nals to be held in the near future.
In volleyball, D Company has
won all their games and lost none
which makes them League A
champions. The rest of the teams
in that league have lost two or
more games with still morq games
to be played. In League B, F com
pany is leading with five victories
and one defeat on their record. A
Company and C Company are the
only likely contenders for first
place with three games yet to be
played. They have both lost one
tilt already. F Company, from all
indication, will be the league
championship which will play D
Company for the Corps champion
ship.
