The Lowdown On
Campus distractions
By Alfred Jefferson
Guion’s Wednesday and Thurs
day offering is to be ‘‘White Car
go”, starring Hedy Lamarr and
Walter Pidgeon. As Tondelayo, the
African siren, Hedy Lamarr does
a good job of acting, but she looks
just a little bit too made-up. The
scene is laid in the jungle, where
Hedy gets all the men to go crazy
over her and kill each other. In
the end she pays for her sins,
though.
The Lowdown: Nothing to go
A. W. 0. L. over.
Friday and Saturday Guion’s
double feature will consist of “My
Friend Flicka” and “Night In New
Orleans.” “My Friend Flicka is just
what a nine-year-old or a complete
sentimentalist would go for. It is
the unrealistic story of a horse,
with no love interest, and not much
of anything. Don’t let the posters
kid you—it’s not the most wonder
ful picture ever filmed. In fact, as
far as yours truly is concerned, it
rates among the lower five per
cent. The second feature is just a
“B” whose story is fairly interest
ing. At least there is more to it
than the biography oi a horse.
The Lowdown: Why they always
make a good book into a bad pic
ture is more than we’ll ever know.
This bill is strictly a time-waster.
Today and Wednesday the Cam
pus is showing “Swing Out the
Blues” with Bob Haymes, Lynn
Marrick and a number of specialty
singers. This is unfairly good musi
cal, but it’s not much in the way
of a drama. Just a kind ot vaude-
ville-the-screen production.
The Lowdown: Not too bad, but
don’t go if you expect much.
Thursday and Friday’s picture
will be “The Rains Came”, with
Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy.
This is a god screen adaptation of
Louis Bromfield’s best-seller. Much
Df the artistry in the book is pre

served in the show, and it really is
worth seeing. The story is set in
India, in the midst of one of the
many famines which occur there.
It is mainly a love story.
The Lowdown: Very good; every
one will like it.

it is the sailing toward the Gulf

getting back. The important thing
is to get away in time to get the
little ladies on the line.
There are tales that can never
be told, in print, about the week
end. Deep deep are they buried in
the cellars of old A. & M. An author
is the queerest animal in the world.
Why? His tale comes out of his
head.

Only comment on this flood condi

Best man wins
A race to the finish started this
morning when three boys each de
cided that his own whiskers were
more manly than those of the other
two. Bill Daily, Marc Smith, and
Joe Wall are planing to spend all
their spare time between now and
Friday cultivating the scratch
growth around the chin. May the
best “ape” win.

Fletcher Henderson, prominent
Negro bandleader, and his orches-

in the Grove.
Labeled “The King of all ar

present following after working in
the capacity of Benny Goodman’s
arranger for several years. Hen
derson is often given much of the
credit for Goodman’s current pop

Having played at many of the
more popular night clubs in the

Recent honors have been won

he recently received the promotion
to his present rank.

amino acids and the values of pro
teins are measured by the kinds
and amounts of amino acids pres
ent. The American Meat Institute,
realizing that meat and meat prod
ucts are an important source of
food and feed, recognizes the need
for increasing knowledge of the
different kinds and amounts of
amino acids in meat.
Dr. Lyman and his associates re
cently have developed a new meth
od of assaying the amino acids in
foodstuffs, including meats, which
method has come to the attention
of some 85 leading laboratories in
this country and in Canada. This
method, it is believed, will greatly
facilitate the study of amino acids
in foodstuffs and ultimately enable
better evaluations of these differ
ent kinds of protein.
