Bazooka Precedes
Air and Sea Rocket
Missiles, Weapons
The portable antitank bazooka
is the “grandpappy” of the rocket
launcher aboard American fighter
planes, according to C. W. Theleen,
manager of the General Electric
plant turning out launchers here.
The bazooka is light enough for
a soldier 1 to carry on his shoulder
but fires a rocket potent enough
to knock out a tank or fortification.
It was produced at V-E plants a
year before its battle record was
announced several months ago by
the Army. Most ordnance requires
years of development, but already
the bazooka is the patriarch of a
whole family tree of rocket weap
ons for land, sea and air combat.
Some are in the developmental
stage, but others the enemy al
ready has felt in damaging quan
tities.
The airborne rocket launcher
consists of three long barrels made
from a special material developed
by G-E engineers, suspended un
der the wings of American fighter
planes. Dive bombers in the China-
Burma-India and other theaters
are using the bazooka at speeds

in excess of 400 miles an hour and
hitting al types of ground, sea
and air targets with pint-point ac
curacy, according to Brig. Gen.
Guy H. Drewry, district chief conm-
manding the Springfield Ordnance
District. In commenting on combat
reports, he adds that the rockets
launched by the bazooka are es
pecially effective in sudden sur
prise attacks.
General Drewry also quoted this
statement from a recent broadcast
in German# beamed to continental
Europe from London: “The Allies
havq availabel a rocket gun that
can be used from small landing bat
tle. The new rocket gmn has prov
ed its worth in the Pacific. Its
fire serves to cover the landing

A rare form of ball-shaped

It usually breaks up with a mild
