THE BATTALION

I ntra murals
By J. W. Bell
Last night in the Y.M.C.A. Cab
in, the summer intramural pro
gram was planned only after a
delicious barbecue supper was
served which I managed to get a
fair share of. I would like to ex
tend the thanks of the Recrea
tional Officers and myself to W.
L. Penberthy and M. L. Cashion,
and members of the Dining Hall
Department who made the supper
possible.
After supper, Penny explained
in full the intramural program for
the current semester and pointed
out the duties of the Recreational
Officers. He also pointed out the
invaluable experience they would
receive in performing their duties.
He urged them to do their utmost
to make this program the best yet.
The program will consist of soft-
ball, volleyball, basketball, tennis,
a swimming meet, and a track
meet. Each organization may enter
all six events; however, the final
score will be the sum of the five
events in which the highest num
ber of points were made. There
will be no compulsory events.
Softball games and tennis
matches will be played at 4:15 p.
m. only. There will be only one
league in softball. This will give
each organization a chance to play
every other organization on the
campus. In tennis, there will be
two leagues, with a playoff be
tween the two league champions.
The tennis teams will be made up
of three doubles each of which
will play an eight game set in
each match. At least four men
must be out in order to partici
pate in any one set of matches.
Substitutions can not be made un
less there are more than six men
present. Once a man has completed
a set or is taken out he is through
for the day. In short, there must
be at least four men present in
order to play and more than six
men present in order to make sub
stitutions in the tennis matches.
There will be only one league in
volleyball, but there will be two
in basketball. Volleyball games will
be played at 5:00 p.m. only. Bas
ketball games will be held at both
4:15 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The swim
ming meet and the track meet will
be held on weekends which have
not been announced at present.
Only one limitation has been
placed on the eligibility of the
players. If a man has competed
against another conference team,
he can not enter the sport event
in which he participated for con
ference competition with the ex
ception of baseball. In addition,
there will be no excused absences
from P.E. given for the purpose of
participating in intramurals.
From what was said at the
meeting last night, it would be
safe to say this summer will find
intramural competition at its keen
est if the Recreational Officers get
the cooperation from their outfits
they expect. If you haven’t seen
your officer yet, do so immediate
ly and let him know what after
noons you have off and the events
you wish to enter. You are respon
sible for the success of your outfit
so do your part to make it the best.
