Football Prospects
For ’43 Better;
Trainees May Play
By Ruben R. Caro Costas
Football is once more coming to
life. Coaches are once more wor
rying about the material they have
and the prospects coming. Many
schools have suspended football
for the duration due to lack of
transportation facilities and the
shortage in manpower, but many
others have decided to keep going
until ruled otherwise by the war
department. The Southwest Con
ference approved last month in
their annual meeting to let the

AMERICAN HEROES
BY LEFF
With every superior officer on the cruiser San Francisco either
killed or wounded during the battle of Savo Island, Comdr. Herbert E.
Schonland, who was stationed below as damage control officer, sent
word to the officer on the bridge to take charge, ending tersely, “I’m
too damned busy down here fighting fire and water.”
We fight beside our Navy heroes if we keep busy buying War Bonds.
army, navy and marine trainees
to take part in sports in this con-
efrence if the army, navy and ma
rine officials will let them partici
pate. Pending upon the approval
by the Army of letting their
trainees now stationed at this col
lege to take active part in sports
representing this school, Coach
Homer Norton is planning to use
all available men in this college to
turn out for football. He will be
be dealing mainly with players
under nineteen years of age as
those boys over that age are serv
ing in the armed forces.
If the army lets their trainees
take part in football next fall, A.
& M. will have a better chance to
be represented by a good team in
the conference race next fall. Of
the army, marine, air corps, army
engineers and sailors stationed at
this school indications are that
Coach Norton will have a good
choice to pickt he best, and it has
been said that there are many
good football players, stars during
their college careers, stationed
here. The Navy and Marines had
said their trainees may take part
in sports if they have time to do
so. Texas U., Rice, T.S.U., and
S.M.U. football chances to be rep
resented by a good team next fall
have been boosted by this decision
as the^majority of their players
are in the Marine, Navy reserve.
Only A. & M. is waiting for an
approval from the Army officials
to let their trainees play football
for us.
Sports Program Is
Announced By PE
For Summer Term
Once again school is getting un
der way and the Intramural De
partment is making plans to start
with a better and bigger Intra
mural Program for this current
semester.
Plans are under way to hold an
other Open Tournament which
proved to be so popular and excit
ing last summer. The Intramural
Department tried a new way to
give more sports to the Cadets
last summer by holding an open
tournament in the following
sports: Aggieminton, tennis, (sin
gles and doubles) ping pong, horse
shoes, handball and golf. That
tournament met with the approval
of the whole student body and was
a complete success. This summer
Mr. Penberthy, director of the In
tramural Department, is planning
to hold another open tournament
in handball, badminton, and golf
and any other sport where there
is enough interest. That open tour
nament will start two weeks from
last Monday.
In this open tournament every
one that wishes to enter is eli
gible to do so from the Frog to
the Senior. They all will try their
skill in those events. The tourna
ment is held by means of single
elimination and the winner of each
sport will be crowned college
champion in that particular sport
and will receive a medal.
Out of that open tournament,
the Intramural Department will
hold the Intramural program held
every semester. This year’s Intra
mural program will not be as big
as in previous years because the
enrollment for this semester is
very low, but this does not mean
that it would not be a good one.
Softball, volley ball, and tennis
will make up the program for the
present. The date has not been
set yet, but all indications are
that it will start within the next
two weeks.
This time there will be no Class
A and Class B but each outfit will
be represented by two teams in
order to enable more boys from
each outfit to take part.
It is up to all cadets taking P.E.
300 whether they want to take part
in either open tournament or the
Intramural program for this se
mester, as this time will not count
in their P.E. grade. -
Let’s start getting in shape and
make this Intramural program a
successful one.
