Health Officer Urges Precautions Against Typhoid ‘' r f you have not been vaccinat ed against typhoid fever within the last twq or three years, go to your doctor and secure this protection at once,” Dr. Ceo. W. Cox, State Health Officer, advises prospective campers, Boy and Girl Scouts, and other summer vacationists as the out-of-door season approaches. “Typhoid fever,” he continued, “is unnecessary and preventable. Every case is due either to com munity negligence or to the ignor ance or carelessness of some indi vidual. There would be no deaths from typhoid if every person were protected by typhoid “shots.” Some of the most serious and far reaching outbreaks of the dis ease have been caused by drinking milk or eating foods that have been handled by carriers. A ty phoid carrier is a person who has had typhoid at some time and who even after recovery carries the germs of the disease in the urine and the discharges from the in testinal tract. Carriers who are careless in their personal habits are likely to infect any food they handle with unwashed hands. Dr. Cox explained the typhoid germs are picked up and spread from person to person by water, milk, flies, fingers, food. Every case of typhoid is contracted by the way of the mouth and the di gestive system.-“The only way to be absolutely sure of typhoid pre vention is by immunization,” he declared. American war expenditures for the first quarter of 1943 were about a billion dollars more than for the entire war year 1918. Most German bookshops have been stripped clean of all well- known classical literature, though they continue to receive large stocks of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” and books by other Nazi party leaders. Intramurals To Lead Athletics For Summer Texas A. & M. College prides it self on having one of the countries’ most extensive programs of intra mural sports. Every effort will be made during this semester to pro mote a very extensive program for the students, and all students are urged to participate in the sports of their choice. The Military organization will be the unit of competition and these units will compete against other such units on the campus in a variety of sports. Members of championship teams in each of the sports offered will receive the of ficial intramural medal properly en graved. Within each unit an athletic of ficer will be appointed whose duty it will be to promote intramural activities within the unit, and to organize the different teams for competition. This semester softball, volley ball, and tennis will be offered as the team sports, and in addition there will be tournaments in such sports as handball, golf, badmin ton, and any other sports where there is sufficient interest. In ad dition to these it is planned to have at least one swimming meet and one track meet. Army and Navy Search For Men In Specialized Fields The task of scoring papers of the 300,000 young men who took the first joint Army and Navy qualifying pre-induction tests, marking their eligibility for the Army and Navy Specialized Train ing Programs, has been completed and “congratulatory” letters have gone out to those with highest qualifying marks. The Army expected to have mailed, by the middle of May, 76,000 letters to the men who will be given special consideration for the Army Specialized Training Programs. The Navy is sending official notices to men who quali fied for the Navy training pro grams, but the number has not been determined. The examinations were given in early April to men who have had high school education or its equiv alent. About 200,000 of those tak ing the tests expressed a prefer ence for the Army. Scoring of the papers was supervised by 10 re gional directors. All men who qualified will re ceive cards ear-marking them for consideration. The Army men will soon receive additional explicit in formation, in the form of a book let of 50 questions and answers, designed to give the future soldier a full understanding of ASTP. Recognizing this vital contribution being made by the na tion’s dairymen, The American Guernsey Cattle Club has insti gated and is sponsoring a plan for paying tribute to this deserving group. Attractive pins are available for every person engaged in milking or feeding Guernsey cattle. These pins identify the wearers as essen tial producers of Food for Victory and will be a source of justifiable pride in recognition of the impor tant contribution American dairy workers are making to the war ef fort through food production.
