Aggie Fish Battle Rice Slimes Today At 3:00 By Mz Naikin Battalior Soorts ditoi Fish-Slime Battle Should Prove Thrilling Affair; Passing Game Gives Ags Advantage This afternoon the A&M cadet corps will receive a respite from gruelling varsity competition and insteead will get the opportunity of watching another team—the Texas A&M freshman eleven who clash with the Eice Slimes at 8 o’clock on Kyle Field. It’ll be a battle between two un defeated teams although a tie with the Texas Yearlings mars the clean Rice slate. Both are reputed to have the cream of the crop in re gards to material and you can be sure of a slambang battle. This writer has had the oppor tunity of seeing Coach Lil Dim- mitt’s charges in their two victori ous games and numerous scrim mage sessions and I will readily attest that this year’s edition of the Aggie Fish is one of the strongest in many a year. The team boasts of an excellent passer in the person of Buryi Baty and I believe his straight-to-the-mark aerials will prove the difference in today’s game. From the dope gathered on Bill Wallace’s Slime eleven, the Hous ton team appears to have a very weak pass defense, and if that’s the case, the Fish, with Baty on the firing line, will eat ’em up. However, it is certain that the Slimes worked tediously on their pass defense and may prove to be a stumbling block. At any rate, let’s all come out on Kyle Field this afternoon and give the Fish a deserved support! They have been working for us, so let’s show ’em our gratitude by attend ing the tilt, which should prove to be one of the top thrillers of the season. Oh, yes, I almost forgot. This corner’s prediction? Give it to the Fish, 20-7. Hope this does not put you on the spot, Mr. Dimmitt! Sports Squibs; “He’s the Coolest Soph Fve Ever Coached,” Says Norton of Barney Welch ... Had a very interesting ses sion with Coach Homer Norton Tuesday and discussed almost everything under the sun—football, war, etc. . . . during the course of the discussion about the Aggie team, the question was brought up to Norton by this scribe on Barney Welch, the sensational Cadet soph ace . . . “He is the coolest sopho more,” commented the Aggie head coach, “that I have ever coached” . . . “Not only that,” continued Norton, “but he is the only soph that I have ever put in a game to kick out from behind our goal line” . . . That’s a fine compliment to Barney, whose excellent per formance in the past two games has gotten the Aggies out of their early season doldrums and placed them in the winning class once more . . . Looking over a few Southwest Conference statistics . .. Leo Daniels and Cullen Rogers, both of the Aggies, form the best combination in the Southwest if not the nation . . . Leo has com pleted 54 aerials out of 121 at tempted for the phenomenal yard age of 540 yards . . . Cullen has received 27 aerials for 340 yards . . . His teammate, Bill Henderson, Aggie end, is only a notch behind in receptions with 19 passes caught for 182 yards . . . Barney Welch is edging ever closer for that lead in punting . . . his average at pres ent is 40.9, only a notch behind Dean Bagley’s 41.6 average . . . Otto Payne broke into the pass interception column by snagging two in the SMU game ... Payne now has three to his credit . . . “Uncle Bill” James, the Aggie line coach, who also teaches a course in football, gave his class a quiz a week or so ago and the lowest grades were made by two of the Cadets’ leading football players . . . And the highest grade was made by a kid who had never played football in his life . . . Oh, well, that’s the way it goes . . . Don’t forget, fans, you can’t get any student tickets at Houston for the Rice game . . . they are on sale at the YMCA and will be there un til 5 p. m. Friday . . r . Jean Thielicke, medical tech junior at University of Minnesota, didn’t know the meaning of the term “date” when she arrived from Melbourne university in Australia as a transfer student. 3 Blouses, 2 Sam Browne Belts, 2 Cloth Belts, 2 Cotton Shirts and 1 Rain Coat were left in rooms 318 and 320, Baker Hotel. Undefeated Records At Stake in Tilt Baty and Flanagan Expected to Spark Potent Fish Attack By Chick Hurst This afternoon at 3 o’clock on Kyle Field the undefeated and un tied Texas Aggie Fish tangle with the unbeaten but once tied Rice Slimes in a game which promises to be as thrilling as any the Aggies will be privileged to witness this season. Heading a star studded lineup of the Fish, and sparkplugs of the potent freshman attack are Coach Lil Dimmitt’s “touchdown twins,” Buryi Baty and Marion Flanagan. Baty, the passing artist of the Fish tosses the pigskin with a speed and accuracy which makes fans heark en back to the days of “Slingin’ Sammy” Baugh and “Bullet Bill” Patterson, and the swivel-hipped running of Flanagan reminds one of none other than the former Ag gie great, Dick Todd. Together this combination has accounted for a goodly portion of the Fish scores in their 25-8 tri umph over Allen Academy and 71-0 slaughter of the 628th Tank De stroyers from Camp Hood. The Slimes are expected to have plenty of trouble attempting to stop this combination. But the Baty-Flanagan combi nation isn’t the only worry Coach Bill Wallace’s Slimes will have. For the first time this season fullback Gus White of the Fish will be in top shape, and this boy is one of the hardest driving runners to ap pear at Aggieland in many a day. White injured his arm in an auto mobile accident early in the sea son, and saw no service at all against Allen Academy. He put in a little time against the Tank De stroyers, but was still not in best condition although he played an outstanding game. Williamson In the Southwest Conference, the Texas Aggies go to Houston to play the Rice Owls. According to the ratings, the Owls should win in a mighty close game. Texas will have a bloody battle on its hands when it meets Texas Christian at Fort Worth, but should come through with victory. Southern Methodist is picked to win over Arkansas when they meet at Dal las. That wonderful Tulsa aggrega tion, rated at 96.1 should be at least a touchdown better than Bay lor at 93.8. The game will be played in Waco, home of Baylor. It’s a habit. Notre Dame and Michigan are in the limelight again this week. For the first time since Novem ber 5, 1909—33 years ago—the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame will meet the Wolverines of Michigan in a football game. The game will be played in the Notre Dame sta dium. Last week the Army qlmost bot tled up the marvelous passing of Notre Dame’s Angelo Bertelli— almost, but not quite. with the Rice Owls Saturday after noon in their minds the Texas Ag gie gridsters have been running through plays in an attempt to build a better passing game. They drilled on pass plays Tuesday aft ernoon with satisfactory results. The reserves were used to rqn Rice plays against the first and second string teams yesterday and Coach Homer Norton was not im pressed with the Aggie defense. A new course record was made when Jer ry Thompson of Texas ran the dis tance in 11:51.4, however the mark will not be a conference record since it was not set in the annual conference meet. Johnny Zeigler of the Aggies,'who came in second at the meet still holds the confer ence record. Zeigler finished just a step ahead of Mack Umstadd of Texas. Joe Vajdos was fourth and Murrell Mc- Glothin, both from A&M, placed fifth. Jack Polhemus, Clarence Hafernack, and Jim Comley all of Texas finished in that order, to win the meet for the Longhorns. Tom my Winn and Johnny-Cheatham of A. & M. finished after them. New berry, Texas, and Bibbs, A. & M. ran but their points were not count ed. much yardage. Don Luethy, stellar tackle, who has been out with an injured shoul der since the Baylor game, is in good shape and may be expected to see much service in the game with Rice. Center Bill Sibley is still nursing an injured knee from the SMU fracas but will probably be able to be in the lineup Saturday. The remainder of the team is in tip-top physical condition and will be ’raring to go Saturday. AGGIES:— Look Your Best for the Rice Game GET YOUR HAIRCUT BEFORE YOU LEAVE Y.M.C.A.
