Scoggin Pulls Familiar “Blaze of Glory ,,
Stunt in Final Appearance With Waco Duns
There may have been better col
lege or semi-pro players better
than John Scoggin, all-conference
Aggie catcher and star backstop
and outfielder for the Waco Dons,
but I seriously doubt if there were
any players who could close their
career as magnificently as Scog
gin.
Many remember Big John and
his final day with the Texas Ag
gies. What he did in the deciding
game with Texas Longhorns will
be one remembered long after the
present crop of Cadets is gone.
With Texas right on the heels of
the Aggies, and with the score
only 5-4, in favor of Lil Dimmitt’s
valiant crew, and men on second
and third in the eighth, John was
sent in from his catcher’s post
and given the ardent job of pitch
ing the Ags out of the hole.
Scoggin had not pitched at all
this year and it was a bit out of
the ordinary for the “jack-of-all-
trades” of the Aggies. However,
cool as a cucumber, Scoggin forced
the first man he faced to hit into
a double play, and what he did in

the ninth frame will always stand
out as one of the greatest deeds
of an Aggie athlete. The next three
men to face Scoggin went down
by the strikeout route. John had
fanned three straight and had
helped Aggieland win its third
baseball championship in the his
tory of A. & M.! That was his
career-ending contribution to the
Aggies!
But our story does not end here
at all. For after leaving the Ags,
Scoggin was signed up by the
Waco Dons, a strong semi-pro
team. He played excellent ball with
the Dons and it was not long be
fore he was batting cleanup for
them. Of course, the league being
a bit faster than a college con
ference, Scoggin hit a bit less than
he did at A. & M., but neverthe
less stood out as one of the stars
of the team.
At any rate, his big day came
the day before he was to leave for
the army as a second lieutenant
in the Quartermaster Corps. Waco
was playing a doubleheader that
day, and again, mindful of his final
performance at Aggieland, Scog
gin closed his career in a blaze of
glory. In the first game, John
smacked two hits, one of which
was a triple that drove in the
winning run. But Scog did not stop
here, for the Dons were having a
hard time 'in their second fray.
And Scoggin did not let them
down. Waco was just able to push
across four tallies but they were
enough to win the game, and who
do you think was responsible.* None
other than our pal, John Scoggin
who really hit his peak by batting
in all of the four tallies!
And that’s our tale--—a tale of a
youngster whose brilliant fast fin
ishes leave opponents in a groggy
state. Today he is Lt. Scoggin of
the Quartermaster Corps and the
Aggies and many of John’s friends
know that Uncle Sam real 1 y hit
on a gold mine when it comes to
that final battle with the Axis!

Loupot’ Lipscomb, and Campus Cleaners in Three-Way
Tie in League Race;Theatre and Madeley’s Scores Wins
Victories by the Campus Clean
ers and Loupot’s Trading Post
over the heretofore undisputed
league-leading Lipscomb’s Pharm
acy last night threw the already
tight Twilight League into a
three-way tie between the afore
mentioned teams.
Cleaners Beat Lipscomb’s
The Cleaners defeated Lips
comb’s ■ Pharmacy 5-4 in a thriller
that wasn’t decided until the final
inning of play. The former came
from behind to score two tallies
and snatch the game out of the
fire. Lipscomb’s counted twice in
the second on a hit by Atkins,
walks to Carrington and Schaper
and an error. They added two niore
the following frame in the same
procedure. Campus accounted its
first two runs when Manager Hor
ace Jennings smacked a homerun
with a man on base. They added
another when Grantham duplicated
the feat with a smash into left.
Theatre Wins Another
In the other games played, Cam
pus Theatre continued its winning
streak by grabbing their third
straight win after four losses, ■ de
feating the Aggie Cleaners to the
tune of 5-2. Madeley’s Pharmacy
broke into the win column once
more defeating the Faculty 3-2
behind the brilliant hurling of
Lawler.
Loupot’s in the meantime lashed
out a 6-run rally in the final inn
ing to come from behind and nip
the Holick’s Cleaners, 10-5. Three
walks and three hits accounted for
the tallies.
Holick’s scored all their five runs
with a three hit attack in the sec
ond inning. A double by Frost, and
singles by Ricks and Frymire and
walks to Nesbit, Warren, Maley
and Kiser accounted for the rally.
Lonpot’s opened the scoring in the
first stanza on a walk, hit, error
and fielder’s choice which scored
two runs. They added two more
on hits by Newberry, Reese and
Twilight League and Bryan All-Stars to Battle it Out
July 23 and 24; Voting On Players Confined to Managers
While talk in the sports world
goes on all about all-star games
and world series, etc., Aggieland
finds itself in exactly the same
spot, but their all-star game with
Bryan has already been set.
At a special meeting of the
Bryan managers and officials of
their Commercial League last
night, the idea of an all-star game
was heartily approved and the
dates, Thursday, July 23, and Fri
day, July 24, set as the big day
of the affair.
The primary difficulty confront
ed by the Bryanites was the fact
that a few of their players do not
get off from work until 8 o’clock
and could hardly make it here
when the starting time is 7 o’clock.
However, the boys decided that
this was only a minor problem,
and, that since the All-Stars will
be composed of two different
teams, all difficulties could be
easily attended to.
Thursday, July 23, has been set
as the date for the tilt to be play
ed at College Station. At present,
the site for the game has not been
selected or even thought of, but
the possible use of the diamond on
Kyle Field may be in the offing.
Before the Twilight League sea
son had ever started and plans
were in the skeleton stage, the
thought of using Kyle Field for
all-star and playoff contests had
been seriously considered by the
various league managers, and its
possible use may not at all be out
of the question. However, nothing
will be known on the question un
til three dr four days before the
game. The site will be left in the

Black Smacks Home-Run
Meanwhile, the Campus Theatre
finally finding itself after four
bad starts, pushed the Aggie
Cleaners further down the stand
ings by slamming out a 5-2 vic
tory behind the four-hit hurling by
Bud Rideout and a homerun blast
by Bill Black with two mates on
the sacks. Black also played a
prominent part in the first-inning
two run flare by opening the game
with a double. Glass doubled him
in and then came home himself on
Albert’s blow to left.
The Ag Cleaners scored their
first run in the sixth on two walks
and a hit. They threatened serious
ly in the seventh but Rideout came
out unscathed, allowing only one
run. Howard Herron ended the
game by popping out to third.
