Coach Anderson Ordered to Report for Duty
By (Hike Haikin
Battalion Sports Editor
Circumstances Make it Almost Necessary
For Coaching Staff to Add Another Man
If that A. & M. coaching staff
continues its onward march to the
army, this scribe’s worry for gath
ering sport news will be all but
over.
For the second consecutive week,
a member of the coaching staff
has been called to duty, this time
Col. Frank Anderson, cross-coun
try and golf mentor, and a candi
date for Capt. Dough Rollins’ va
cant spot in the track department.
Well, whatever Coach Homer
Norton had in mind in that respect
is over for Col. Andy leaves for
Ft. Sill July 11 to resume his du
ties as a full-fledged colonel of
the U. S. Army.
But back to Coach Norton’s
problem. His statement that no
new coaches will be hired at pres
ent doesn’t mean that no new
coaches will be hired later. In fact,
the latter may be made necessary
by the circumstances.
But as to who the new coach or
coaches will be, your guess is as
good as mine. Before Dough and
Col. Andy bid this school adieu
for a short duration, the possibility
of reorganizing the staff was only
a simple gesture to Coach Norton,
but now, well, that’s a horse of a
different color.
Let’s just take a peek and see
what kind of a reorganization
could be made out of the coaches
present. Football, baseball and
basketball could easily be taken
care of by Coach Norton, Lil Dim-
mitt, and Manning Smith respec
tively. Bill James plus the three
mentioned above would take care
of football adequately with such
boys as Bill Buchanan, Fuel Wes
son and Charlie Stevenson among
the student coaches taking care of
the Fish.
But the big problem still reverts
to track. Of course, Coach Norton
could take over baseball and Lil
Dimmitt put on track, but that
hardly would be adequate to either
of the mentors. Coach Norton, in
the first place, would be tied up
with thousands of other important
things at that particular time
while Lil could hardly take care of
two sports at once.
So if you’re still a bit bothered
on the question whether A. & M.
will hire a new coach, just put
your money that they will, but on
a temporary. basis only, for both
Capt. Dough and Col. Andy are

Cross-Country and Golf
Mentor to Leave July 11
Fort Sill to be Destination of Former
A.&M. Commandant; Served 22 Years Here
The possibility of appointing
Col. Frank Anderson, head A. & M.
cross-cduntry and golf mentor, as
the logical successor to army-
bound Dough Rollins as head track
coach of the Texas Aggies, was
nipped in the bud when it was
learned Monday that the farmer
A. & M. Commandant received
orders from the War Department
to report for duty July 11 at Fort
Sill.
Col. Anderson’s call left the A.
& M. coaching staff in a more
complexed situation than it has
ever been. Coach Norton, however,
still maintained that “nothing will
be done until September.” Only
Coach Norton, Lil Dimmitt, Bill

of classification or outfit. An ap

this page. When it is filled out and
turned in to the Intramural office
the entrant is officially in the con

The events included in the tour
naments are golf, table tennis,
handball, tennis, aggieminton and
horseshoes. The greens fee for the
golf entrants will be 25 cents with
no charge to those reaching the
semi-finals and final matches.
Friday at 5 p.m, is the deadline
for the entrants. There are four
more days in which to fill out an
application blank and submit it to
the Intramural office. The sports
will begin early in July. Contest
ants will be notified of the opening
of the season.

the Twilight League season, the
Campus Theatre bunch uncovered
