’Jean Dickenson Will Make Second
Appearance on Opening Program
In keeping with its policy of bringing outstanding artists and
personalities in the field of entertainment to the campus, the Texas
A. & M. Town Hall will again present an outstanding program during
the summer session.
Town Hall is in its fourth straight year of operation under its
new name and it is organized and managed entirely by students.
John Lawrence, Town Hall manager, has announced that tickets for
the summer performances will be on sale in the Administration Build
ing during registration. The cost-f-
of a student ticket to all perform
ances will be $1.00.
The summer attractions will in
clude Jean Dickenson, popular
young soprano, Henry Scott, pian
ist, The Jackson Jubilee Singers,
and Romance of Old Mexico, an
unusual program giving the his
tory of Mexico in music and song.
Also a famous swing band to be
announced later will appear on the
program.
Jean Dickenson will make her
second appearance on Town Hall,
for she scored a tremendous suc
cess in 1940. The popular young
concert star spent the early part
of her life traveling around the
globe. It was in Denver at the age
of 16 that Jean began to sing. She
entered the Lament School of Mu
sic to study with Florence Hin-
man. After graduation she stepped
right into several big commercial
broadcasts at Radio City.
She has been featured on the
“American Album of Familiar Mu
sic" hour for the past four years.
Miss Dickenson made her debut
with the Metropolitan Opera Com
pany in January, 1940, as Philine
in “Mignon.”
Henry Scott is an accomplished
pianist who mixes satire and hu
mor with his performances. He
originated the term “concert sa
tire” which is based on the premise
that humor has a place in the
concert hall just as much as on
the stage and in literature. He has
been called the “Will Rogers of
the piano” since he uses that in
strument in the same way that
Will used the rope.
He is an authority on the vari
ous styles and methods of playing
the piano and his imitations of
the world’s outstanding pianists
are among the best. Scott played
a successful six weeks’ engage
ment in the Rainbow Room, Radio
City, New York, and was widely
acclaimed for his ability as a
pianist. Scott incidentally holds
the world’s speed record for play
ing the “Hungarian Rhapsody.”

delightful combination of story,

Other members of the cast in
clude Greta Rubio, lovely mezzo
soprano who was born in Mon
terrey; Velma Montoya, talented
Spanish-American dancer; Elena
Aves, composer of Mexican songs,
whose work is recognized for its
special beauty and appeal; and
the Charro Mexican Orchestral ac
companiment, which adds flavor,
color and provides an ideal back
ground for this unique production.
The group has toured quite wide-

ly in Latin-America and in the
United States. The program is so
representative and enjoyable that
it is recognized as contributing to
Latin-American good will.
The rhythm and character of
songs of the colored race are a
relic and an inheritance combining
joy, superstitution, and religion.
Their jubilee chants, plantation
melodies, camp-meeting shouts,
and spirituals are authentic in ev
ery detail, when offered by the
Jackson Jubilee Singers.
As a special attraction the Sing
ers will present John Garth, gen
erally regarded as one of the out
standing Negro baritones in the
nation. Garth is now appearing in
the Broadway success “Porgy ’n
Bess,” and will take special leave
to make the summer tour.
All of the singers are trained
musicians, possessing the power
and finish acquired only by long
professional experience, yet sing
ing and entertaining always with
the abandon and spontaneity which
so richly characterizes the artistry
of their race.
Programs of musical excellence,
works of the best known Negro
composers, gripping dramatiza
tions, and a great variety of en
tertaining diversions, make this
attraction unique, and one of the
most delightful on the American
stage.
