    Aggies and Longhorns Easily Outclass
Rest of the Teams in SW Conference Race
As rain and wet grounds keep
the Southwest Conference baseball
race from advancing, let’s just
stop a minute and analyze the
scrambled situation existing in the
race.
At the present time, the Aggies
and Texas are tied for top posi
tion with a percentage of .667
each. Texas has won two of their
three games, while the Aggies
have annexed four of six tilts. AH
the other teams have lost at least
two games.
With the possible exception of
Rice, no team seems to be in the
same class with the Aggies or the
Longhorns. Even the Cadets suf
fered their two setbacks at the
hands of Baylor and S. M. U.,
they appeared to be so much bet
ter than their opponents that it
was incredible that they allowed
a run. However, that was just one
of those things which probably
won’t happen again.
Texas, meanwhile, seems to be
regaining its stride after losing to
the Cadets. The Longhorns of ’42
have, by far, their weakest team
in many a year. Not one pitcher
on their staff can be counted on
for too many victories, while most
of their offensive rests upon the
shoulders of three or four men.
Coach Lil Dimmitt’s Aggies
have Charlie Stevenson, whose
pitching has given the Maroon and
White four victories. Their two
losses came when Stevenson was
not on the monnd, and that brings
up a question that has already
been tread on. One pitcher will
not win a conference champion
ship, and unless the Aggies hit
upon another successful hurler,
they will have a hard time. Smokey
Carden pitched great ball against
Baytown last Saturday and may
have got over his initial nervous
ness. If that is the case, the other
conference teams, including Tex
as, are in for a very unpleasant
season.
It’s still between the Aggies and
the Longhorns for the flag, but
should a certain lanky youngster
by the name of Smoky Carden hit
his stride, Texas may easily bow
out of the picture.
Sports Squibs From Here and There; Johnny
Morrow Is Second Sacker for New Orleans
Johnny Morrow, former Aggie
athlete, is now playing pro ball
with the New Orleans Pelicans . . .
the boy who the experts said
couldn’t hit a curve ball, is now
the leading contender for second

This Week If Weather Holds Up
Dimmittmen In
Preparation For
Baylor Game Sat
The Texas Aggie baseball team,
inactive since Monday because of
inclement weather, will attempt to
get some sort of a workout this
afternoon in preparation to their
on-coming battle with the Baylor
Bears Saturday afternoon.
Stevenson to Start
Leading the conference with four
wins and two defeats, the Aggies
will be battling to keep out front.
Coach Lil Dimmitt plans on start
ing his ace, Charlie Stevenson,
who has won all four of the con
ference games. After two mediocre
years, Stevenspn has made good
on his early promises and in addi
tion to being the leading pitcher,
he also is Plugging the ball at a
.429 clip and is on the heels of
Captain John Scoggin for the top
position.
Outfield Problem
With Leo Daniels on the side
lines because of an injured shoul
der, Coach Dimmitt is in a query
as to who he will start in right
field. Jimmy Newberry is the reg
ular outfielder but he has just
been manning that spot in recent
not be ready for another' week or
so. I. D. Smith, sub-infielder, has
been manning that spon in recent
games, but has not hit enough
to satisfy Dimmitt. Lil already
has indicated that he probably
will use Stevenson in the garden
er when the big fellow is not pitch
ing, but until then, that particular

Manning Smith’s
Netters Open Season
Against ETSTC Today
Tennis season opens officially
for the Texas Aggies this after
noon as they take on the Lions of
East Texas State Teachers Col
lege—the matches to be played in
Commerce.
Journeying from there to Dal
las, the Aggies meet S.M.U. on the
courts Friday afternoon.
Scheduled tennis matches with
Texas Tech here Tuesday were
cancelled and postponed because
of rain.
The Aggies, coached by Manning
Smith, have been working out reg
ularly since the first of the year.
The veteran Xavier Fernandez of
Peru is the mainstay of the team.

Play Baylor Cubs
At Waco Tomorrow
The Texas Aggie freshman base
ball squad journeyed to Waco this
week-end to meet the Baylor Cubs
there Friday afternoon. The Fish
are coached by Bill Buchanan,
former Aggie athlete.
Only one conference game has
been played by the Aggie Fish
this year. They defeated the Texas
University Yearlings here last
week by a score of 6-5.
The most promising hurler on
the Aggie squad is Lee Forrest,
a big right-hander who held the
Yearlings to five hits; and was in
hot water only once during the
entire game.
Earlier in the season the Fish
came through with a defeat of the
Allen Academy Ramblers who were
their first opponents of the year.
Swinson, Baber, Hughes, Fowler
and Selman are the leading hit
ters for the freshman team. For
rest will probably start the game
on the mound and either Strohym-
er of Selman will he in harness.

Sailor, Somewhere in Pacific,
Anxious to Play Football Here
i
When the current war is over
and the men in service for the
duration are released, Coach Hom
er Norton can count on one man
from the U. S. Navy coming to
Tekas A. & M. to play a bit of
football, and it all came about in
a funny way.
Last Fall before the Aggies
made the trek to Seattle, Coach
Norton received a letter from Sea
man Alvis 0. Hardie, who was sta
tioned At the Naval Air Station
in Seattle. Seaman Hardie said he
was very anxious to see the game
and tendered his services as water-
boy or anything at all so that he
could get in to see the game.
Coach Norton answered thanking
him for the offer but explained
that he always used the same wa
ter boy. However, he added an of
fer that should Hardie show up at

the hotel in Tacoma, he would see
that the sailor got into the ball
park. He did and a friendship
sprung up between the coach and
the sailor.
Since then they have been cor
responding and the most recent
letter is dated “Somewhere in the
Pacific” but Hardie says he is
looking forward to the day that
hostilities are over and he can en
roll at Texas A. & M. and try for
the football team.
Norton says the boy is a good
prospect and he, too, is looking
forward to the day he registers at
the college. “He is one of the fin
est boys I have met in a long
time,” the Aggie coach added. ,

In Triangular Meet Here
The strong, undefeated Aggie

ruining the perfect record of the
Fish.
Larry Wolf is the outstanding
man on the team and takes part
in the 440-yard dash and the re

is the best all-round man who
enters several field events in ad
