Baylor Has 11 Men That Will Match Any
In the Conference According to Marty Karow
“The Baylor Bears have a first
team that will match anybody’s
in the conference, Texas includ
ed.” So spoke BacMield Coach
Marty Karow when addressing the
Aggie gridsters. And Marty
should know. He scouted the Bears
in their past games with Arkansas
and Villanova respectively, arid
has learned quite a bit about the
Bruin team. True, about 60 per
cent of the offense is built around
Jack Wilson, but there’s still the
other 40 per cent which counts.
For example, there’s Milton Crain,
a powerful line-plunging bruiser
of the “Kimbrough” variety, who
really can sock ’em and rock ’em.
Then there’s “Slinging’ ” Dwight
Parks, the Bear’s ace passer. Parks
has been throwing that ball with
needle-like precision all year, and
if he’s right next Saturday, may
cause plenty of trouble. It may
be remembered that it was his 30
yard pass to Jimmy Witt which
gave Baylor its lone touchdown
against the Aggies last year. So
the byword is, “Watch out for
Parks.”
That good ole Baylor line is
led by Buddy Gatewood, sturdy
Bruin pivot man, and Big Jack
Russell, one of two All-American
candidates for the Bears. Russell,
end, weighs 230 lbs., and if you
don’t think it’s hard to move a
man that size, just ask some of
those tackles that have to do it.
Boy, they really have their job
cut out for them.
Baylor has always given the
Aggies a tough battle, and it prob
ably won’t be any different this
Saturday. Last year, even without
Wilson, the Bears gave the Ag
gies one of the toughest battles
all year, before succumbing, 14-7.
So don’t get your dander up
about this game Saturday. It’ll
be a hard battle all the way, and
some of the “smart” boys, who are
giving 20 points or more on Bay
lor, better hold their breath.

Wm. & Mary over George Washing
ton; Villanova over Manhattan;
Xavier over St. Louis U.; Brigham
Young over San Francisco (might
be close); Southwestern of Mem

TCU Sophomore
Backs to Get Big
Shot Against Rams
Sophomore backs will get their
big chance in the T. C. U. line
up this Saturday.
Badly crippled after four tough
games, Coach Dutch Meyer will
reach far down in his bag for boys
to send against the mighty Ford-
ham Rams in New York. But some
of the newcomers have flashed
great promise and may be pleas
ant surprises.
Emory Nix, the 185-pounder who
quarterbacked the Corpus Christi
Buccaneers to the State High
school finals in 1938, will open at
the helm of the Purple Saturday.
Although only a sophomore Nix
is a natural signal caller and one
of the finest passers on the squad
The only married man on the Frog
squad, he’s older and cooler than
some of the juniors and seniors.
Starting at left half in New
York will be Van Hall, the 190-
pound brother of Johnny, star of
the great 1938 team. Also a sopho
more, Van has impressed the
coaches with his speed and en
thusiasm. But his most important
duty against Fordham will be punt
ing.
Poor kicking wrecked what
chances the Frogs had against A.
& M. after Kyle Gillespie suffer
ed a broken leg. Hall is not a
polished punter but he has fine
leg drive and is learning rapidly.
He’ll start out kicking against
Fordham.
One other soph will open in the
Purple secondary. He’s big Frank
Medanich at right half. The only
veteran will be Frank Kring, the
senior fullback.
Capt. Bill Crawford, the left
guard, and Center Billy Blackstone,
junior center, are also expected
to miss the Fordham game. Joe
Rogers, junior from New London,
will open at the guard spot and
Jim Woodfin, a soph who was a
pleasant surprise in the Aggie
game, will go at center.
Despite all this patching, the
Frogs have no idea of taking
a bad beating at Fordham. Scouts
reported the Rams have one of the
finest and most vicious teams they
ever watched. But just the same,
the Frogs are going to throw
everything they have at the New
Yorkers.
