SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1941 Kats With 20 Lettermen Back May be Tough Today THE BATTALION Page 5 The Sam Houston Bearkats, who play their second game of the season when they meet the Texas Aggies on Kyle Field today are making a strong bid for top hon ors in the Lone Star Conference after having held second place for the past three years. The Bearkats opened their season last week-end by swamping the Lamar Junior College team by a 51-6 score and with 20 lettermen in their midst may prove to be a tough nut to crack today. Ben Hightower, End Pacing the Sam Houston team are Ben Hightower, end, and Billy Vaughn, quarterback. Hightower led the field of individual scorers in the conference last year. The other outstanding end on the Bearkat squad is Van Herrin, who has proven to be an able pass-receiver. Behind Hightower and Herrin are Jack McCann and Weldon, Kethan, who are a pair of > t!ttiv«r£s£tg' Captain Victor Frnka and Tony Ditta. A converted center, George Moore, is showing promise of de veloping into a desirable tackle. Hardly another team in the con ference will be able to display a better pair of guards than Woodell Grubbs and Edwin Mangum, a couple of rough, fast 200 pound sophomores. Grubbs was an all conference center last year and looks like an all-conference pros pect at guard. Backing up the two first-string guards will be a pair of numeral men, Marvin Musgrove and Willie Sirman. Jackson-Walker Letterman Cecil Jackson and Jude Walker will hold down the pivot position. Jackson, a senior, weighs in at 195 and Walker who is a sophomore tips the scales at 190. The Bearkat squad is gifted with 10 experienced backfield perform ers. The team has power to burn in a backfield composed of Captain capable reserve ends. This backfield combination averages 202 pounds and has plenty of speed. For speed and broken field run ning Sam Houston has Bruce Kivel, Heston Fitz, Jimmy Driskill, Char lie Martin, and Jan Jones; in addi tion to Billy Vaughn. Sam Houston, is the team which, in the fall of 1939 upset the Rice Institute Owls 9-8, and nothing would please Coach Puny Wilson, an ex-Aggie football star, more than to upset the Cadets in today’s opener. The Abilene grid eleven hasn’t lost a ball game since the 1939 campaign and they started out on the right track again this fall with an impressive 31 to 7 win over Texas Wesleyan last week. Baylor hasn’t been tested yet but daily scrimmage sessions indi cate that they are going to have a much improved offensive ball club, but just what they have in store on the defensive side is still a mystery. Hardin-Simmons plays a wide open type of football and lack of reserves in the forward wall may be more than just an early-season worry to the Bruins. The Bears have Jack Wilson, one of the best all-around backs in the conference, ready for another full season and he’ll carry most of the offensive burdens. Milton “Freight- Train” Crain, 200-pound fullback has been moving like a fast ex press through the line on power thrusts, and will help with the Baylor ground game. Right now, it looks like the Bay lor mentor is going to throw a lot of passes at the Abilene team as he has been working with passing chores all week. Wilson, Dwight Parks, Bill Coleman, Kit Kittrell and Paul Cook have all had their play in the chunking end and there will be at least one tosser in any backfield combination that the Bears put on the field. Working in the starting back- field with Wilson and Crain will probably be Weldon Bigony at the blocking back post and Travis Nel son in at the wingback hole; while the starting places in the front line will be filled with Jack Russell and Ed Hickman, ends; W. B. God- bold and Bill Stephens, tackles; Odell Griffin and Lewis Self, guards and Buddy Gatewood, cen ter. The tradition of all intramurais banquets, good food and few speeches, was lived up to Thursday night, when Mr. W. L. Penberthy entertained the athletic and recre ation officers and their assistants in Sbisa Hall. Mr. Penny was toastmaster and introduced thei main speaker of the evening, E. L. Angell. Angel provided a n interesting short talk, along the lines -of in tramural partici pation building fine men. “A man has to have qualities of leadership, coopera tion and training, and I know of no better place to acquire these than the intramural playing field,” Angell remarked .He also stressed service as one of the chief ideas of belonging to an intramural, program. Mr. Penny then explained many new rules and reminded the boys of the old ones. One especially important new ruling, due to the many boys living in the corps headquarters organizations, is that the boys will play with the out fit where they live. Mr. Penny also indicated that, as the gym floor is Oxford being torn up, handball will be started in place of basketball. This applies to Class A only. The Class B players will begin their basket ball at the regular time and play their games in the little gym. Here is another new rule that is important, if you want to keep your outfit out of the forfeit dog house. Matches will start prompt ly at 4:10 and 4:55 p.m. and no for feit time will be allowed. Last year, forfeit time was allowed and it slowed up the games considerably. So be on time for all your sched uled games. W. J. Douglas, Jr. INSURANCE AGENCY Rooms 18-20 Commerce Bldg.
