ON KYLE FIELD
With Mike Haikin
Sports Squibs From Here and There; Skarke
And Sibley Recovering From Minor Injuries
Dick Skarke, understudy for
Willie Zapalac at the blocking
back position, is recovering rapid
ly from his knee injury ... he
has been hobbling around the field
with his game clothes on, but has
not been doing any heavy work . ..
Ditto for Dub Sibley, who was in
the college hospital . . . both should
be ready for the season’s opener
. . . Guard V. I}. Basey, one of the
most promising candidates on the
Texas U roster, and Ralph Park,
second string wingback, have
dropped from the team due to in
juries . . . DIDJA KNOW . . . that
there are only 12 fifty-yard line
seats in the Kyle Field Stadium
. No wonder no one ever gets
a fifty-yard line seat at A. and M.
. . . G'osh! 33,000 seats and only
12 of them on the fifty yard
line . . . that Roy Bucek and Felix
Bucek, brothers from Schulenburg,
both guards, will make possible the
only brother act this year for the
Texas Aggies.
1900 was the only year in Aggie
football history that the team fail
ed to win a single game. . . they
played Texas twice and lost to the
Longhorns 5-0, 11-0, and both of
the games were played in Austin-
no wonder . . . that only Arkansas
and Texas have the Indian sign
on the Aggies . . .

Aggie Sophomore
Is Former No. 1
Longview Center
Herbert Skidmore, 165-pound
sophomore of G Battery, Coast
Artillery, answered Coach Homer
Norton’s call for varsity centers
Thursday afternoon.
Skidmore played on the Long
view Loboes’ state championship
team of ’37 and lettered at cen
ter the following two years. He
was selected as second-string center
on the mythical All-District Team
at the end of his last year of high
school football.
Under DeWare
Coach Norton is impressed with
Skidmore’s work and is having him
workout every day. Skidmore has
been placed under the tutelage of
Freshman Coach Charlie DeWare,
former Aggie great who was All-
Conference center in ’36.
A number of other boys turned
out but Skidmore was the most
promising candidate of the group.
He is already making a good show
ing and may develop into a perfect
answer of Coach Norton’s plea.
Sibley O. K.
Dub Sibley, who was koncked
unconscious in Wednesday after
noon’s scrimmage, is out of the
hospital and will he back in the
middle of things in a day or two.

“AN AGGIE INSTITUTION”
Watch Him Go Today
Sneaking a preview of Texas
Aggie football, the cadet corps will
have a chance to see the team in
action this afternoon on Kyle
field at 3:15 p.m. Action on the
field will be between the. Varsity
and the Fish and the game will
not be without all the color of a
regular gridiron match. On hand
for the battle will be the Band, yell
leaders, programs and of course the
soft drink concessionaires.
This will be the second time that
Coach Norton will give his remod
eled Texas Aggie machine a test
flight. The Varsity met the Fish
in a preliminary game Wednesday
and the team won over the Fresh
men by a 27 to 0 score. In the
Wednesday game touchdowns were
scored by Sterling, Pickett, “Bama”
Smith, and Daniels. Dub Sibley
showed good form in a goal line
stance. He and the center of the
line held the middle against four
hard tries the fish made in an
attempt to score from the one
yard line.
The Sam Houston Bearkats met
the Lamar Junior College Card
inals last Thursday night and
Coach Norton had three of his men
on hand for espionage purposes.
They came back with a wealth of
material out of the 51-6 victory
scored by the Teachers. The in-
eligibles and Fish have learned
the plays that the Teachers used
and the Fish will be the “Bear
kats” this afternoon.
The Fish have been undergoing
fairly heavy drills in order to
get them ready for the Varsity.
The line, coached by Charlie De-
Ware, and the backs, coached by
Manning Smith, will be more than
ready for the encounter. Helping
the coaches are Dog Dawson, Bill
Conatser and Bill Buchanan, for
mer Aggie greats.
The highest ranking cadet offi
cer in 1908 was a major.

To a large extent, the success
of the Intramural Athletic pro

on the sophomore department man
agers. Not only do they do the
bulk of the sport administration,
but from their ranks are chosen the
nine junior departmental managers
and finally the three senior de
partmental managers who super
vise the entire program.
