members of this company were in
the Chicago run of the original
production of “The Swing Mi
kado” which was sensationally
successful and ran for two years
in Chicago and later in New York,
finally touring the country.
John Burdette, famous bass bar
itone soloist of The Deep River
Singers, also appeared in the stage
production “Run Little Chillun” in
New York, and “O Say Can You

first prize in 1930 in tlie Chicago-
land Music Festivals contest, Bur
dette has been the only winner to
have the honor to appear at the
Soldiers Field in Chicago every
year at this great event sponsored
by the Chicago Tribune.
The Chicago critics said: “John
Burdette thrilled the Festival au
dience into a volcano of enthusi
asm with his performance of “Old
Man River”, “Wagon Wheels,” and
“Sylvia.” Burdette was also pre
sented daily through the events de
partment at a Century of Progress
exposition in Chicago for two
years.
The Deep River Singers have
concertized over America for the
past two years, and during the past
year have broken every precedent
by having special floor show pro
ductions built around them at the
exclusive Edgewater Beach Hotel
and the Famous Chez Paree in
Chicago. The quartet has been fea
tured over the National Broad
casting and Columbia and Mutual
Networks.
The varied program of the Deep
River Singers includes the well
loved spirituals and work-songs
and ballads in the Plantation
Scene, followed by a group of
classical songs and arias in formal
attire, musical arrangement for
this was arranged for the Deep
River Singers by the original ar
ranger for the original “Swing
Mikado.” The brilliant, colorful
and amusing costumes which they
wear in this part of the program
were also designed and made by
the designer and costumer who
costumed the original “Swing Mi
kado” company,—John Pratt.
This is the only concert com
pany in America giving such a di
versified program and featuring a
costumed production of the “Swing
Mikado.
The program of the Deep River
Singers is divided into five dif
ferent parts each featuring various
members of the troop. The first
part will be the plantation scene
where eight numbers will be sung.
These will begin with “Swing A-
long Chillum”, written by Cook
and continue with “Workin’ On the
Railroad”, a work song, “Po ’O’l
Lamb” by Parks, “Shortnin Bread”
by Guion, “The Lonesome Road,
featuring Ben Wailes by Guion,
“Who Built the Ark”, a tradition
al Negro folk song, “LiT Liza” by
Dunbar, “Wagon Wheels,” featur
ing John Burdette and written by
Hill will complete the introductory
part of the program.
The program will continue with
“Drink To Me Only” by Parks, and
an aria featuring Merton Smith
which is to be selected. Other
numbei’s featured in this part of
the program will be “Sonna Will
Be Done” by Dawson, and “Don
Don Buddie” by Williams, featur
ing John Burdette basso.
Spirituals will also be included
in the program. They will be
“Swing Low Sweet Chariot”, “Roll
Jordan Roll”, De 01’ Ark’s A-
moverin’ ” and “Joshua Fit the
Battle.”
Mary Robinson then contributes
to the entertainment with a piano
solo by Medley.
The concluding part of the pro
gram will be made up of selections
from “The Swing Mikado” by Sul
livan and will feature special ar
rangements and costumes fi-om the
original production.
These entertainment features
are not to be confused with The
Deep River Plantation Singers or
the Swiss Yodel ers who appeared
on the summer entertainment se
ries here during the first six weeks
of the summer session. The Deep
River Singers are not the Deep
River Plantation Singers although
the name might seem familial^ as
each is an entirely and dif
ferent organization featuring a
similar but at the same time dif
ferent program for the students
here at A. & M. College.
Distractions—

with several good shows to liven
up things. The top laurels go ei
ther to “Blood and Sand” or
“Strawberry Blonde”, depending on
the individual taste for a light or
heavy show.
“Strawbexry Blonde” which is
showing Wednesday and Thurs
day is a show that will certainly
provide a good evening’s entertain
ment. Jimmy Cagney is at his
best in a part that seems to fit
his talents like a pair of hand
made boots. Backed with such
top-notch support as Olivia de
Havilland and Rita Hayworth and
a dialogue pepped up by such
remarks as “Ain’t sh esome fudge,
though?” and “Oh you kid”, any
one who likes good comedy with a
few tears mixed in won’t go wrong
with this.
Showing with “Strawberry
Blonde” as double feature is an
other Ellery Queen mystery which
is different from the rest of the
series only in name and land
marks; the rest is the same old
stuff.
Appearing at the prevue Satur
day night, Sunday and Monday is
one of the best “heavy” shows
that has been circulated in some
time—“Blood and Sand.” It has
some very good acting in with
Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell and
Rita Hayworth taking the top hon
ors.
The show concerns the rise of
a young matador, Juan, played
by Tyrone Power, who becomes
the foremost matador of Spain.
At the height of his popularity his
inevitable downfall is brought
about by the tantalizing Rita Hay
worth.
It is well filmed in technicolor,
showing to advantage the gay col
ors and costumes used in the Spain
of several hundred years ago, and
is well suited to show to advan
tage the beauty of Rita Hay
worth, Linda Darnell, and the
thrilling bull fights.
Showing at the Campus Friday
and Saturday is a double feature
with “Model Wife,” starring Dick
Powell and Joan Blondell, tak
ing the main spot, and “Colorado”
-WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1941
with Roy Rogers, as the fill-in.
“Modgl Wife” is a fairly amus
ing picture with a slight twist
to an othei-wise commonly used
comedy plot. It concerns the at
tempts of a man and wife, Dick
Powell and John Blondell, to keep
their marriage a secret in order
to keep from losing their jobs
at a dress shop where they work,
for a hard-hearted old women.
Everything, naturally, goes wrong
until the old woman has a change
of heart and, after seeing the er
ror of her ways, proceeds to set
things right. Its a fair show if
you have nothing else to do.
