Page 4- THE BATTALION -THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 1941 MUSICAL MEAN DERINGS By Murray Evans One man and his drums who has been doing a bang-up job of hide beating here of late is Jack Buch anan, Aggieland Orchestra’s spark plug in the rhythm section. Jack entered school at mid-term, replacing Red Doerr as Aggie- land’s drummer. From Port Arthur, where he played with several lo cal bands, Jack brings to the Ag gieland a wealth of experience and plenty of originality. There’s one number in particular in which he shines; it’s called “A Man And His Drums” and has plenty of drum beats here and there on which he goes to work in earnest on his pots and pans. It’s good for goggle-eyed admira tion from the lookers-on. Bob Crosby is getting away from his Dixieland style and con centrating more on choral work. And after hearing one of his ef forts in this direction, I’m inclin ed to say, more power to him! But .to get back to the ‘effort’—it’s a peach of a recording called “You Forgot About Me.” On the moody side, it features male vocal lead and the harmonious King Sisters in the background. If you liked Tommy Dorsey’s “I’ll Never Smile Again” of last summer, and the Ink Spot’s “If I Didn’t Care” of the same season, then you will be enthusiastic about “You Forgot About Me.” The Ink Spots were on the out until a couple of months ago when they came across with another best-seller called “Java Jive.” Bas ed on something that sounds strangely like an old mother goose tune, it rocks along at a leisurely pace and is colored with the shad ed harmony of which Negro musi cians alone are capable. One of the good old tunes of yesteryear is currently going the rounds on the nickelodeons. It’s vocalled by the King Sisters again and backed ably by Bob Crosby’s CALL TO COLORS / T , HE Arrow's are passing in review — a whole ■L regiment of shirts, handkerchiefs, ties, and underwear in sharp, neat, "go together” patterns reflecting the fashion trend to gayer and bolder colors. ARROW SHIRTS Improved A8<.M Concerf Band Is Tops For Spirit and Color Actively engaged in spreading good will for A. & M. in various parts of the state in recent weeks, the concert group of the Aggie Band is beginning a season of mu sical entertainment with its most promising set-up in recent years. Director Lieut. Col. R. J. Dunn claims it to be the best aggregation of musicians to come under his di rection in the Aggie Band since 1929. Composed of the “cream” of the regular 216 piece Aggie Band, the concert group each year plays con certs for Parents’ Day, various Sunday afternoons throughout the spring, and a final concert during the last week of school. This year, however, the band has made trips to Victoria and to Galveston for performances in those cities. At Victoria the band acted as guest artist for the annual music fes tival held in that city. Attending the festival were some 50 high school bands from that section of the state, who came for the purpose of playing before judges for criti cism for the state and national contests. At Galveston the band played a concert, the proceeds of which were used by the Galveston Rotary club in their drive for a playground park for boys. Seniority of rank or years holds no ties on this year’s concert band. Ratings as to seating order in a Bobcats. Remember “You’re Mean To Me”? On the turn around chorus three trombones take it and make you wonder why on earth any band leader uses anything in the way of brass except trombones! For it’s sweet horn, and no mis take. •section are made strictly upon mu sical ability and effort produced. Novel is the sight to see a “fish” holding down a first chair position, but such is the case in at least two sections. The concert band has made fa vorable impressions upon its audi ences this spring with the finesse and polish of its musical technique, but the factor that makes the unit a success is the spirit and feeling introduced into its music. “They send thrill-wave up and down my spinal cord and produce goose- bumps all over me when they swing into a stirring march,” a member of the Victoria audience was heard to comment.
