Extension Service
Urges “Live-at-home’
Program for Farmers
The primary need of Texas far
mers is larger farm income. This
applies especially to cotton farm
ers.
Dairymen, producers of pork,
wool, and mohair, truck and fruit
growers and cattlemen are in rel
atively good shape. Not as good as
they might be, but better than the
cotton farmer.
The immediate outlook for the
cotton producer is bluntly put by
H. H. Williamson, director of the
Texas A. & M. Extension Service,
as “anything but encouraging.”
“All of our foreign markets for
cotton are rapidly being destroyed
or nullified,” he said. “Foreign de
mand will surely be even less by
fall. The surplus will be tremen
dously increased, even under the

Lt. Col. Watson—

Colonel Watson is a graduate of
the Command and General Staff
School and is on the General Staff
Corps Eligible List. His varied ser
vice includes a tour of duty as
P. M. S. & T. at the University of
Wyoming. He retired from the
pstricted production program. No
one knows how much cotton we
may be able to sell, “If the price of
cotton is low, the price of food
stuffs is relatively high. In the
face of this situation, the farmer
who makes his farm as nearly self-
sustaining as possible will not only
be doing himself a good turn but
will do much to fit in with plans
for national defense.”
The Extension Service has stress
ed the ‘live-at-home” program for
many years. Results from the state
as a whole have been gratifying,
but many individuals can still profit
by adopting the production of food
and feed for home use.
Other sections are turning to
this program, as indicated by re
quests from Alabama, Mississippi,
Georgia, and a number of other
states for details of the Texas plan.

Dean F. C. Bolton pointed out
that certain changes might be
made in the ruling if, after the
ruling had been in effect for a
year, it was found that any of the
weights given the various students
positions were unfair. The ruling
passed the faculty by a unanimous
vote.
Final examinations at Alma Col

eliminated according to an an

change is being made with a view
to stimulating students to keep

44 Gridders Report
To Morley Jennings
Heavy scrimmage work was in
store for the Baylor Bears this
week as Coach Morley Jennings
began bearing down in preparation
for the Bruins’ opening tilt with
North Texas State Teachers College
in Waco Sept. 28.
The Baylor mentor has 44 grid
ders out for the fall training period
this year and indications are that
there will be some hotly contested
battles for the starting places in
the Bear lineup this fall.
Back for another year with the
Bears are all 11 lettermen from
the 1939 team which finished in a
second place tie with S. M. U. in
the loop standings. To work in
with these seasoned veterans, the
Baylor mentor will have 10 squad-
men, four top ranking gridders who
were held back with scholastic
troubles last year and 19 sopho
mores who are given more than an
2V en chance to work their way into
the starting lineup.
